I own an awesomely-badass mower (BCS 850 diesel walk-behind tractor mated to a 38" mower deck with integral bagger), but keep it at my folks' place (which has more than 2 acres that need mowing). The machine would be overkill for my little yard to mow every week or two, but it can also handle tall grass with aplomb. What with all the yard and farm work I do over at my parents', I tend to neglect my little 0.25 acre yard at home. In fact I usually let the grass get knee high before taking action. At the last possible moment before my yard becomes a forest, I hitch the trailer to my truck, load up the BCS and a big Stihl weedeater too, and come back to mow my place. Since the mower bags the grass, I dump all that onto my little compost pile.

I just mowed on Tuesday, so my place looks great right now. The clumps of (unmown) iris, daylily, and tansy all about to bloom can finally be distinguished from the grass (which was until Tuesday just as tall as the irises and daylilies). But I could tell that my neighbors were getting nervous that I'd given up mowing...

Also, I'm a night owl, and have all sorts of various other weirdnesses.

but the wife is a nutcase.

After I moved in, I noticed she was watching me when I worked out and when I worked in the garden. One day when I was mowing the yard, she told me she kept dreaming about me. (She knows I'm gay). I told her I had given up women and was celibate, just played it off like a joke.

She doesn't work at all. She doesn't have a drivers license, but her husband just bought her a car. She seems to drink pretty much all day.

There is a beautiful cork tree between our properties and she keeps saying they are going to cut it down when they put in a new seawall. She tells me her dog bites, but keeps inviting me over.

I am planting like crazy on the fence line between our two homes. Things grow quickly here and I hope to have a green screen up soon.

There are many weird people in the Keys, but this one takes the cake.

... when they did live next door they kept chickens in the back yard, I suspected the guy was into smoking cannabis and they'd often have loud parties that extended very late - I went round there and threatened the cops a few times and on one occasion I actually did call them - this was at 3am though.

They're nice people... just maybe I'm more conservative in my family values than they are.

You can have up to three hens. It's the foodie/organic/local/anti-factory farm culture here. I've thought about getting some, but we've got lots of other animals that keep us hopping.

when i was a kid in the 80s there was this senior empty-nest couple next door... the husband had this obsessive complex about his lawn, and it was so short and carpetlike i'd never seen anything like it (as an adult, i finally played golf for the first time, and i recognized the greens had the same lenght, feel and consistency of his lawn)...My dad was always working long hours, and notorious about letting our lawn get overgrown, so our neighbor would always send coded messages about cutting it, too (he even cut it himself a couple times when our mower was broken)...

He was also like Mr. Miyagi in the sense that ALL of his mowers, tools, appliances, and even his car to a lesser extent were at least 10-15+ years old...But he never bought anything new because he ALWAYS knew how to fix things to a better-than-new condition...I think he was a Navy vet, so maybe he learned it there...

36. They consider me weird and I consider them weird.

I have 13 neighbors that border my property, well, about 1/2 of them are on the other side of a public access right of way but they think they own that and my land too. They think I'm weird because I don't want them riding their 4 wheelers, snowmobiles or vehicles on my property nor do I appreciate them wanting to use my yard as their own. I think they're weird because they don't use their own yards.

The one I find the funniest but still a little strange is actually a very nice guy but he has this obsession with weeds. He's older, must be near 80 or so now..but really an active go getter. He hand cuts weeds...and he's declared war on my dandelions! We keep our front yard and immediate back yard pretty decent, the last couple hundred feet of the rear yard has several weeds. With living across the road from farm fields well, we're bound to get weeds, beans, corn, wheat or anything else that may blow over or be carried over by birds. We can always tell when the neighbor's been over, there are the remains of the whatever he's chopped laying on the grass.

My husband and I were sitting on our front porch the other day and we'd just mentioned that we had a couple dandelions in the yard. A short while later, here come that neighbor. He was working his way across his yard chopping his and then there he was, 1/2 way into our front yard chopping one out. We were trying so hard not to laugh. He never said a word to us and we didn't say a word to him. But, along come some guy walking and he started telling him about getting his weeds under control but he has these neighbors...

71. I've lost a couple trees last year to one neighbor and his weed/grass killer.

He doesn't like to mow up against the evergreen trees so he sprays what appears to be grass killer, because everything turned brown, including the bottom of the trees. They died shortly after that.

The neighbor next to him killed several of our trees too, albeit accidently. Five years later he called to inquire about where we bought them so he could buy some for his son. He casually mentioned that he owed us a couple trees and then told us it was backhoe that caused their demise.

It's amazing how people try to claim other property as their own. My son bought an elderly couple's home. The man claimed his two neighbors were great, the nicest people you'd ever want as neighbors. They helped him care for a portion of his yard, leaving him just the amount that was the width of the house so he could get a little exercise. Turned out not to be the case. Both neighbors tried to claim the portions they mowed. While my son was hiring a lawyer for the dispute with one neighbor, he found out the other neighbor had been to the town to petition them to grant him ownership of the portion on his side. Needless to say, both neighbors lost but my son and his wife are no longer happy there.

I can still see the look on my youngest one's face, when at age 9 the neighbors stopped him and told him couldn't play in our backyard. They were going to have a football game and he could come back when they were done.

Another time the school called to complain that my son was in someone else's yard. He was midway in our yard on his way home, yet the school was calling to say I needed to tell him to come directly home and not to play in other people's yards. I told them while he hadn't come in the house yet, he was in his own yard, that I could see him from my kitchen window and he walking my way right beside our garden. They had the nerve to call me a liar, that it wasn't my yard, they knew who owned it and she wouldn't lie about it. (well obviously she did!) They said they were on an upper floor at the school and could see across the field and knew exactly where my son was standing.

Needless to say I set them straight.

Then there's the time the snowmobiles ruined our ice skating rink, the campfire by neighbors in our yard that other neighbors were going to report us for, the snowmobile that chased one of my kids, one son's ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend out there sitting on one of our benches making out, the full size steel goal post that we had to remove that was put in by a neighbor, well I could go on and on.

By the way, I'm female but yeah, I've had my bitchy times with get those damn snowmobiles/4 wheelers/minibikes/4 wheel pickups out of my yard. It's only 1/2 acre lot, so it's not like we're talking a lot of space to do that stuff in either. My insurance agent insisted we carry a million dollar umbrella policy because if someone got hurt, they could sue us.

47. An elderly couple lives next door

and the woman has tried to control us since before we moved in, 15 years ago (pushed us to cut down a tree in our yard- she hates trees.)

She is continually furious because we don't have an immaculate lawn like they do, and she is personally insulted if we dare to go out on a weekend afternoon while our lawn needs mowing. Her house and lawn are always perfectly groomed. Ours?-not so much.

She calls us names such as "tramps". She jumps out of her screened-in porch like a demented jack-in-the-box and starts screaming at us about some infraction. She also screams at random neighbors and people walking down the street.

Once her landscapers parked in front of our driveway when I was almost ready to drive the kids to school. When I asked one of the workers to move it, she came out screaming that he had every right to park there. I mentioned the police, and that ended that.

At first I thought she was just terminally obnoxious but over the years it seems clear that she is psychotic. We rarely see her, but every once in a while she does come out raving incoherently. It's really quite pathetic.

I feel very sorry for her passive husband- she verbally abuses him too. Very sick woman.

A month or so again they hired some upscale painters to do their exterior. The second day, after they had most of the house sanded, she comes out screaming at the painters to "Go away!!" They're like, sorry, lady, but we have a contract. I guess they finally got the husband to drag her back in.

The people across from me have a son-in-law that owns a lawn service company, and they seem to have no problem blocking access to our driveway with a couple of trucks and trailers whenever they come and do their lawn.

I asked the guys once, nicely, to please refrain from doing so as I want to get in and out of my drive without asking permission. They pretty much told me to fuck off.

Police were there writing tickets and towing vehicles inside of fifteen minutes.

My mother said last week that she feels that someone is breaking in her house because she sees items that aren't hers, like a necklace, and things that are re-arranged. However, she is such a clutterholic and shopper that it's more likely she buys things and forgets about them. Plus I have no idea how, in that mess, you could know if something was re-arranged.

51. Fortunately, he was evicted.

For one, he had the nasal sensitivities of a bloodhound. Any faint trace of smoke or aerosol would cause him to swell up. This included the marijuana smoke from his neighbor above me.

He would constantly call the cops for minor things at all odd hours, for which they were not too pleased, even calling my building manager at 3:00 in the morning.

I also think he was a racist because the neighbor he always fought with was black, and after yet another 911 call, I overheard him arguing with his neighbor and her friend, also black. The idiot neighbor was huffing and puffing while his neighbor's friend was very polite and calm. Idiot Neighbor then says to the friend, "Sir, I don't want you to assault me," despite the fact that the friend was extremely polite and weighed about as much as a 10-year-old girl.

He was also oblivious to other people. One day, I was standing in front of our building and he walks by me, stepping on my foot in the process. He didn't so much as turn around or apologize, and kept walking.

A few months later, he was evicted for nonpayment of rent for six months. I later found out that for all his protestations of cleanliness and order, he had jammed his toilet and was forced to urinate in plastic water bottles.

My wife is Jewish, and they just couldn't take the proximity. That and I had called the cops on him about 18 times.

around. And he walks around constantly, and FAST. Like he's wearing a very long, tight skirt. I know it's not just the acoustics because we've had other upstairs neighbors and their footfalls were audible but within the bounds of normality. I've also discovered, now that I'm working at home and the weather is getting nicer, that he leaves the window open for his dog, and the dog proceeds to bark at everything that moves. That's super cool. I love hearing that all day.

she bends your ear about all your comings and goings so you know she must have a command post at the front window. The people next door leave their three dogs out to bark all day and had the nerve to complain when my little dog barked at them before she got used to them. The other people next door have loud, late parties in the middle of the week and don't keep their yard very well, but are really nice otherwise.

listening through our open kitchen door. She'd often bring up conversations our family had just had and that had to be how she knew. She'd also just open our door and walk in. One time when my husband was home alone, he came out of the bathroom and found her in our kitchen. She could tell me what time and which of our children got up first to shower and get ready for school. We never figured out how she knew that since we keep heavy drapes and shades/blinds on all windows.

One evening when my kids were in HS, they had their friends over. There she was in her upstairs window, white window shade behind her, her body plastered up against the glass to see what was going on. Apparently she didn't think we could see her. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

The clean up held for nice while but the pile 'o crap is starting to build up again...

* The reason we did not get involved was that I ran into someone who had lived across the street from this house and she told me the woman was "seriously nuts"

The weirdest one is this old guy who seems to be the part-time maintenance man for the apartment complex next door. He apparently doesn't have anything to do all day so he walks his dog up and down the sidewalk for hours at a time. That dog must be the most walked dog in the city. And he screams at his dog for any minor infraction, so loudly you can hear him halfway down the street. Once last winter he asked my husband if he could shovel the walk for $20 or some such amount (we have like maybe 10 feet of sidewalk at most - takes 10 minutes to shovel it). My husband gave him a non-committal answer just to get rid of him, and said maybe we'd talk about it next time it snowed. Three days later it snowed 1/2 an inch, and the guy shoveled while we weren't home. Then he came to the door later and demanded his $20. My husband told him "no way, and ask first next time before you just do work". The guy threw a giant fit and screamed obscenities all the way down the street. Nice, huh? He also kept bugging us to rent him a garage, even though he has no steady income and just wants to park his crap in it (we were clear from the first time he asked that we only rent for car storage). He even lied at one point and said he had bought a car (just so he could park it in our garage, no doubt...along with just a few boxes of random crap, right? :eyes: ). I know he lied about that because I see him on the bus every day! LOL! He has this total old pedophile creepy old man vibe, and I really don't like him, because he weirds me out. I keep hoping he'll move away, but no such luck yet...

Then there's the neighbor across the street who I've never seen, but who has an ambulance at his/her house literally every two days. The ambulance people pull up, sirens a'blazing, and go inside for 1/2 an hour and then leave without the resident. I can't figure out what could be wrong with the person that they need an ambulance to come every two days but never have to actually go to the hospital. Mystifying...

I have a couple of right-wing nutjob neighbors, which is kind of amazing to me because I live in an extremely liberal African-American urban neighborhood. You wouldn't think it would be too comfortable an environment for them, but whatever... One of them is a good neighbor - keeps up his property, quiet, and the like - but he's a bit overly friendly and talkative and wants to engage everyone in one-sided aggressive conversations when he sees them on the street. I went to a dinner party at his house once, with 6 other people, and he literally made 90% of the conversation. Nobody else could get a word in edgewise. And I hate it when people like that assume you share their political views and blather on about sensitive topics.

But then again, WE might be the weird neighbors to some people - we're in a medieval recreation society and spend a lot of time getting in and out of the car in strange costumes!

On Edit: Forgot about the 20-something kid who lives next door. His mother comes and picks him up in her car on a regular basis. Last week she came to pick him up and sat in the street and honked angrily for 5 minutes. Once he finally came out, she did the whole "wait till they come up to the door and then pull forward 5 feet, repeat until passenger is really pissed off" thing. Very mature. This behavior eventually precipitated a screaming fight in the middle of the street which culminated in son throwing a package at the car and stalking off down the sidewalk, followed by mother screaming obscenities out of the car window. Just putting the "fun" in disfunctional. :eyes:

freaked out a friend of mine who lives several blocks away when she was walking past his house one morning and he called her by name. He inherited a bunch of money and doesn't have to work. Has plenty of time to poke his nose in places it doesn't belong. His wife is a whack-o too. She'll cross the street rather than say "hello" - just the opposite of him.

107. I live in a building with four apartments....and I have been here the longest.

A number of freaks and nicely, weird people have moved in and out. Most notably:

1)Drug dealers. One of them once got really drunk and walked into the wrong apartment and fell asleep on one of the beds. It wasn't my apartment....three college girls lived in it. They freaked out and almost killed him when they saw him.

2)30 year old Shizo girl. This freak had a crush on me, and would give my girlfriend dirty looks. When she talked to me, she would literally talk about 8 different subjects in the span of 5 minutes. She would yell at random people on the street because they were "making too much noise" at 9:00 am...most of them were just people talking, and not even loudly. She freaked out on the downstairs neighbour once because she flushed the toilet at 7:00 am.

3)Single, older 75 year old lady. She knew my name and occupation before she even met me. Knew everything that happened in the building. She was super nice and, although a little nosy, she was an outstanding neighbour. She passed away from brain cancer...afterwards, her daughter came by my apartment and told me how much her mom appreciated me as a neighbour.

4)The Fighting Salmanders. I called them this because they were a couple who fought all the time and owned Salmanders. I had to call the cops one time after their fighting turned physical. Apparently,she attacked him because he cheated on her. He slapped her after she swung a chair at him.

5)The hot college girls....oh, the hot girls. Very nice, and wore next to nothing in summer. They were...shall I say...loudly passionate at night. Not which each other, I don't think.....

was the young female couple who WEREN'T lesbians...
they were just good friends who had been together
since College, and one of them had a a tiny Chihuahua
that she took everywhere in a big black handbag...

I think I'm the "wierd neighbor" in just about

I'm not sure if the owner knew they were renting to dealers or not. I went over there so many times between 10:00pm and 4:00am to get them to turn the music down and the different person who answered the door each time always seemed surprised that playing really loud music AND singing and playing guitars/drums along with it was a problem. (police were called multiple times too). Once the response was a nonchalant 'well I'm a bartender and we're trying to get band made of the bar staff' as if I would say 'Gee, sorry to bother you I'll get a hotel room so I can sleep.' I googled the address after the for sale sign went up to see how much is was being sold for and the 3rd result listed it as the last known address for someone wanted in another county. Big surprise.

95. Crazy anti-dog lady who owns dogs.

She and her hubby have two dogs, but have systematically gone after (and taken to court) most of their immediate neighbors over dog-related issues: too many dogs (false), dogs barking all day (false), dogs being a nuisance (false). She has also taken neighbors to court over excessive noise and "too many cars on the street" (false and, again, false). She has yet to take on me and Mrs. Rat, but I think that's only because I told her, point-blank, that I will not play her games, nor act as her false witness (she all but asked me to come to court and lie on the stand about our other neighbors). I also informed her that I come from a family of lawyers and private investigators and, with the economy and all, they are looking for extra work, so coming after us would be a spectacularly bad move. I have not heard from her since, but I know it is only a matter of time.

98. He has 4 trucks and he washes them every other day.

The 4 trucks thing is a problem since we live in a townhouse. He has exceeded his allotted spaces so that no one else can park in the visitors' spaces.

He also has a Rottweiler that he never, ever walks. The dog is fucking crazy. Everytime I go outside with my dog, the Rottweiler lunges at the window thinking he can get out that way.

Same neighbor also has a street light installed in his backyard on his deck supposedly to keep burglars away from his house. The only thing it does is blind the shit out of you if you look at it and obstruct our view of the night sky.

To the right is the mother (58-60), her younger daughter (22), and the daughter's husband (21-22, http://twitter.com/SilencedVoice). To the left is the older daughter (40), her husband (30-something), and her son (13? 14?).

They're just odd. The older daughter pulled her son out of school because she didn't like him being taught evolution. The younger daughter's husband is a former Marine. They're all loud, crass, and extremely bigoted. Their Twitter page once had a comment that if Obama passed any health care laws, they couldn't keep their anger inside anymore. And, after reading the DHS report on right wing extremism, they think I'm recording their conversations for the government. Very, very strange.

108. My current neighbors seem fairly sane, but the last neighborhood I

lived in was quite different.

I woke up one night to find a man in bed with me. Turned out to be the guy from across the street who I had known for several years. He had seen lights on in the house and after not getting an answer at the door had discovered it unlocked and let himself in (the boys had fallen asleep watching tv and hadn't locked the door) and crawled into bed with me. I probably should have filed charges, but I didn't. At that time, he was still married and had children living at home.

A couple of years ago he made headlines when he was found bleeding to death inside his burning house. Self inflicted stab wounds. He died. After being assured that he was dead, another neighbor told the police about the body buried in the back yard. Turned out to be a local woman who had been missing for several months.

Mr. Nudist likes to take the compost out in the buff every morning in the spring and summer. When the former tenants were showing me around the wife said that the back porch is a nice place to sit in the morning and drink coffee but to beware of Mr. Nudist taking out the compost around 7:00. I was so stunned, all I could think to say was "I don't drink coffee" as though that would eliminate any encounter.

sex offender. Apparently she had a taste for the boyfriends of her teenaged daughter. Somebody ratted her out. She went, you should pardon the expression, down. Apparently, while she was serving her time, she inherited a house down the street. She got out, moved in, the local cops papered the area with a notice about her proclivities. Anyway this woman's preferred method of dress is in a teeshirt. Nothing else. Likes to bend over a lot. She is not, how do I put this, the fairest amongst the maidens. Not a pretty picture. I have no idea what became of the daughter.
