I can understand the "Disco Sucks" philosophy, but with any genre there are its gems

1. Disco has a certain kind of energy that doesn't exist in other music

Now, you won't ever see me in conquistadors or polyester-wear. I can't sport a 'Fro of any kind, nor do I think anybody would be too keen on having me leave half of my shirt unbuttoned. But, and I say this with the knowledge I may be mocked from here to eternity, disco is just right sometimes.

As for Donna Summer, I always considered her songs typical disco but what do I know? I just lived life with that stuff as background. It was not a major part of my life.

After Saturday Night Fever, they started signing anyone with the slightest ability to hold a note, slapping them into a studio with a cookie-cutter producer, cutting some tape with drum machines and an allusion to fire in the lyrics, and mass-marketing the product through all channels. The mediocre product killed any legitimacy the genre had started to develop.

Before that, even some after it, there were good songs, and there were different directions the music could have gone in. Compare "Hot Stuff" to "Heart of Glass" to "Miss You" to "Staying Alive" to some of the other songs in this thread. The genre had some potential, but it was squashed by money-grubbers.

Just mho.
