In need of a Windows XP whizz.
I just recently purchased a new laptop, which is running XP home edition.

Anyway, I have noticed with XP that I am getting some annoying instant message pop ups (which are all grey with some writing on it) which come out of the blue. I have disabled that bloody microsoft messenger thing that comes with XP ( I much prefer AIM), but I am still getting those annoying pop ups. Does anyone know how to turn them off.

Also, my last OS was windows 98, and with that MSIE would remember my user name to Web sites, so when I would enter a site, all I would have to do is just type the first few lines of my user name and rest of my name would appear and all I would do was hit enter or tab and it would be filled out for me. So all I would need after that was to enter my password. With XP though, that isn't happening. Is there a way of setting MSIE to still do that, while running XP?

Thanks in advance.

FC

1. First, how did you disable the messenger?
Did you just do it in some options menu or did you actually download a free utility that totally kills the program?

Next, do you have auto-complete turned on? That should automatically fill out forms for you... though I don't really recommend using it for security reasons.

3. Microsoft Messenger isn't MSN Messenger
Microsoft Messenger is something built in to Win 2000/XP to communicate across a LAN I believe. Has nothing to do with instant message programs like AIM.

There was a post here before with details how to disable Microsoft Messaging. Someone here should find it.

9. MM is not needed unless your workplace uses it to send messages
I'd disable it.

4. lemme see if i remember how...
to do this..

now, go to control panel... then to administrative tools... double-click ye ole services icon... scroll thru, find "messenger", set it to "manual". you might have to click *stop the service* and/or reboot (it's been a while since i killed this bastard xp service).

hope this helps ;-)

5. Here's a great list of XP tweaks
including ridding yourself of messenger.

Your popup could be from a "web dialer" program, though. These sometimes sneakily get installed when surfing the web. Check your Add/Remove program list to see if you've been infected with one.

8. You can rename the executable.
The executable is named msmsgs.exe. Rename it and it can't start automatically. If you just want to turn it off, CTRL+ALT+DEL and end msmsgs.exe under processes.

11. There's Another type of popup
when your wireless network is blinking in and out there's a balloon help that pops up over the tray icon. There's also one that tries to remind you to update your system (which usually breaks stuff) etc.

I found the fix on MS, but you have to go in to the registry to turn it off.

Go to the Advanced Tab in Internet Explorer, and make sure "Use Inline AutoComplete" is checked. That should do it.
