1. I'm a big fan of "Spiel Ohne Grenzen"
I love Gabriel as is, but he's way better in German.

Spine-tingling.

The movie "Say Anything" has nothing to do with that fact, though. ;-)

10. Well, technically it is Genesis (Gabriel lead)
The Lamia.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMvDHpW8bBA

I'm afraid that's the best clip I could find. I saw The Musical Box do the ENTIRE Lamb tour including costumes and all of the three-screen slide show slides from the tour. It is the only tribute band with full support from all current and former members of Genesis. They're on a Trick of the Tail tour now - first post-Gabriel effort.

Gabriel is in the swirling silk cylinder - it was lowered from the ceiling and the effect was amazing in The Musical Box performance.

Whoever shot the film back in '74 must have been a little stoned and way too into the zoom.

I can never figure out if the song is is about liberation or abject failure and despair, can anyone help me out on this?

But having said that, I love that song.

22. Probably a bit of both, but mostly the first.
As I understand it, the basic context of the song was him being relieved to be out of Genesis, which thanks to a grueling touring schedule and the normal sorts of band tensions had become pretty exhausting, plus he was dealing with personal stuff (his wife had a miscarriage IIRC) around the same time.

and yeah, it's a great song. Kind of funny that a song in an odd time signature would wind up being one of his less self-consciously arty songs.

26. The entire soundtrack to "The Last Temptation of Christ"
I haven't listened to it in ages thanks to my only copy being on cassette tape and all of my machines are dead But, what's interesting is that the first cut (I think) is exactly the same as cut-1 (Hovern enkan) of the CD "The Music of Armenia - Duduk, vol. 3."

Still, so very hauntingly beautiful :D

When I saw him in '93, Biko was the last song. The audience stayed for a half hour afterward singing, oh oh oooooooh oh! Brought chills to my spine.

36. Best concert I have ever seen
Edited on Mon May-18-09 10:04 PM by nytemare
Was him at the Cap Center in 1993. Wonderful. 3rd row.

That being said, I would have to say "Secret World", "I Grieve", "Wallflower" and "San Jacinto".

Hell, I love all his music.

On edit, I would also have to add Biko and Signal to Noise. RIP Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

43. Family Snapshot
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp1j1R8jKyY

(though that live version sorely misses the sax that's no the studio one)

It certainly deserves a mention in the list of his best.

If you're going to include his Genesis songs - well, not always easy to know what was really his, since the official writing credits were just 'Genesis'; but everyone says he was responsible for all lyrics on 'Lamb Lies Down on Broadway', anyway, and "Supper's Ready" is generally credited to him lyrically too. So I'll say "Supper's Ready" - over 20 minutes of Genesis - how can you go wrong with that? :D

I don't care for his Genesis work, but I do like some of his solo stuff.
