Bear sighting in Ballard
By Robinson Newspapers Staff
May 18, 2009 updated 1 hour ago
On Sunday, May 17, at approximately 10:11 p.m., residents in the 4300 Block of West Cramer Street called 911 to report a bear in their yard.

Seattle Police and the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife officers responded. While investigating that sighting, officers were informed that there was an additional sighting of the bear near the intersection of 24th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 63rd Street in Ballard, just before midnight on May 18.

Both the police and game agents responded to that location. There were several sightings of the bear. The bear continued to move in a northerly direction, with sightings at 15th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 70th Street.

Officers assisted the Fish and Wildlife officers as they tracked the bear’s movement for the next several hours. It was last seen in the area of the 9000 Block of Northwest 90th Street.

On May 17, a Ballard resident emailed the News-Tribune and said that he spotted the bear while leaving Copper Gate restaurant on 24th Avenue Northwest. He said it was headed down 64th Street.

The Ballard resident said he quickly called the police and was later interviewed by a game warden.

Ballard, and now they think he's in Shoreline. Who knew that one young bear could make it so far in less than 24 hours.

22. I'd forgotten about that other bear a while back!
Swimming across below the locks makes wa-a-ay more sense than hoofing it across the Ballard bridge!

29. It's amazing how far they can travel in pretty populated areas.
There was one a couple years ago that somehow made it from Shoreline to the University District overnight. You could cover part of that distance through the Thorton Creek wildlife areas, but you would still need to cross some busy areas.

5. If it were any other kind of bear other than a black bear, I would be more worried. Around here
people say you should just bang your pot lids and holler to scare them off.

18. If I remember correctly, pot lids don't make much noise banged together.
'Course, that was back in the 70's in Seattle.

27. Wear lots of bells to scare them off, and carry pepper spray
Edited on Tue May-19-09 05:52 PM by Xipe Totec
just in case they come too close.

Of course, that only works with black bears and not with grizzlies.

But it's easy to tell if the bears nearby are black bears or grizzlies.

Black bears eat lots of berries, so they leave small poops full of seeds all over the place.

Grizzly bears leave large poops that are full of bells and smell like pepper spray.
