Attic fans are awesome! Does your house have one?

Mine doesn't, but the older house I lived in once did, and it was awesome. You had to make sure all windows were up, but the breeze that blew through, with it on, was the best.

1. The last house I lived in had one

Unfortunately job losses forced us to move. We had central A/C but rarely used it. Only in the most extreme hot, humid weather was it ever turned off and the A/C turned on. damn I miss it.

3. We had window fans.

Hot air out during to day, cool air in at night.

We roared right past spring to summer. It's been in the mid-80's here and this old house is sitting in the sun. I can't afford to run the air conditioning yet. It's not June yet. ;-)

6. We had a taste of summer, then a little cool front.

Now it is going back to summer.

In our old house window fans work pretty well.

We have tall ceilings which also helps.

5. They are great, but

make sure either your fireplace is clean or your flue is closed, or else you'll have a house full of ash the second you turn it on. Trust me on this one.

8. I am a great fan of attics. I have my painting studio up there.

And an air conditioner.

9. I used to help my dad install them when I was a teenager

We put them in our house and all the relatives' houses. They aren't that hard to install. Cut the hole, frame around the hole, run the wiring, screw the fan to the framing. A timer is a nice option for nights that get too cold to leave it on.

12. I'm installing one this summer

First I have to finish closing on the house...then the attic fan is a top priority!
