If I apply for unemployment benefits in CA, can I still collect while living in OK
and looking for a job there?

A teacher i work with said I could, but I am not convinced.

1. Yes.
My step-father collected UI from Montana when he moved back here after working there for several years.

2. Several years ago when we moved back to OH, my DH still collected
through Michigan. He'd opened the Michigan claim when the plant closed up there and it was about 5 or 6 months before we moved back here and another almost 6 months after that before he found a job.

But, can I file when I still have contract pay until end of July?
Or, should I wait until that is done?

School is out on May 29, but my contract was for 12 months, so I'll get last paycheck on July 31.

8. The nearest explanation I can find is from their website:
http://www.edd.ca.gov/Unemployment/Need_More_Information.htm

#9:

Whether you are receiving, or expect to receive any payments from a former employer. We ask about this because some types of payments may be deducted from your benefits. A few examples of payments that may be deducted include wages, pension payments, holiday pay, and vacation or sick pay.
------------

I don't know if there is someone available to speak with about that at CA's unemployment bureau or not. So many things are automated now that speaking to a real person can take days or weeks.

5. I think you can, there isn't a residency requirement to receive
unemployment I don't think.

6. Do I have to wait until my last paycheck?
Edited on Sat May-23-09 12:00 PM by Whoa_Nelly
I get that on July 31 because am on a 12 month contract.
Am moving to OKC within the month, and will be seeking employment there.
My actual working days end next Friday when school gets out

9. Generally, you can't collect if you're still getting paid
So although you may not be working, you can't collect UI if you are still getting paid by your current employer. However, there are exceptions and you should check with the unemployment office to be sure.

10. THanks, nnns!
I did look it up on the CA website.
As long as I have reduced hours or not having actual working hours, I can apply :hi:

11. That sounds right!
I was on UI about five years ago and I remembered that there were some exceptions for a lot of stuff, especially when it comes to reduced hours/PT work, etc.

Good luck on the job hunt! :D

16. If I have inherited income, will that affect being able to get full benefits?
Edited on Sat May-23-09 04:38 PM by Whoa_Nelly
THAT is something I can't find online. :(

The inherited income is never the same amount...unreliable amounts monthly & not enough to live on.

Am I screwn? :scared:
