1. For we mortals
I heard about this...for those of us who don't have a clue what you just posted, what do we need to look for and how do we clean it?
In regular English, please. ;)
Thanks,
LuLu

This is what happened

Asson as id connect to the internet a popup box would come up saying windows will shut down in 59 secs

Yesterday a virus was spread to tons of computers with windows xp that had NOT downloaded the fix at

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp

I recommend everyone doing this.

If you dont have a anti virus program (which i didnt) try go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

its an online anti virus site and it cleaned my virus when i had like 5 seconds left until shut down :D The virus is named Msblast, you can also search if you have a file named this delete it asap

link to it btw

11. Just as an aside...
On XP/Win2K, if you get the shutdown message, you can fire up a command prompt (Start-->Run--> Type in "cmd" and hit return)

At the command prompt type "shutdown -a" and that will stop the shutdown process in its tracks allowing you to continue whatever it was you were doing to research the problem.

2. Yup!
I spent a few hours fighting it. Aaargh!!!

I'd reboot the computer and hurry online to research it before it shut-down. Bookmarking at the last minute.

Rebooted again, hurried to the bookmark, speed-read the directions and looked for a link. It was a tech support forum.. a long thread with many different solutions for the worm. Some people succeeded, others didn't. How to decide which solution to try?

The Norton scan patch seemed promising. I linked to it and bookmarked. The computer then reset on me.

I rebooted, hurried to that last bookmark, and downloaded. Reset.

Activated the scanner. No worm - it only seemed to show-up when I went online. The scanner scanned and scanned, and when it finally found the infected files, it reset itself. Reboot.

Tried the Norton scan again. Same results. Reboot again. Back to the forum.

Ahh.. a Microsoft patch? download quickly, before the reboot timer shuts it down!! Success! Reboot.

Activate the patch. finally.. success. No more worm.

7. Do I have to worry about this if I have Win 98?
I ran a "find file" and didn't see anything.
Is this a virus that attacks anything other than XP and 2000?

8. Dont think so
This is a quote from a anti virus site

"This worm runs on and is able to propagate into Windows NT, 2000, and XP systems."

So youre allright :)

9. Yippee!
Thanks. I always stress about viruses. I'm not that computer savey, but use one all the time and have a ton of worked saved on my hard drives at work and home. I have kids that aren't too bright about what they download, too.
