English poll: "My car needs washed" or "My car needs to be washed"?
My wife says the former, I say the latter. Which version of this would you use? (If you don't have a car, or if you have one, but it doesn't need to be washed, just pretend.)

4. Is your wife from Pennsylvania, or that vicinity?
Edited on Sun May-24-09 04:35 PM by marzipanni
I've known several people from that region who say it that way . Also, "I'm going to the store. Do you want to come with?", not "with me?"

On edit, another - "He did it on accident", or "He did it by accident".

14. And it's pronounced "wush'd", not "wawsh'd" LOL
or "wooshed"? Can't put that "oo" sound into a phonetic spelling. It's kind of like the vowel sound in "foot", but not exactly.

10. The one with the infinitive verb.
Otherwise the past tense verbal makes no sense. "My car needs washing," would be okay.

15. I first heard that weird construction when I moved to Altoona in 89.

Honestly, I wasn't even sure that I knew what the locals were saying:

"My car needs fixed, so I'm taking it to the shawp. Yinz wanna come with?"

:wtf:

Eventually, with patience and careful study of context, I was able to decode their secret language. But for a while it was completely baffling.
