My Stepdad just died of Pancreatitis.

He was in the hospital in a coma for a month. They never figured out what caused it. He was only 47. :cry:

14. Just got back from the hospital.

The immediate cause of death was internal bleeding followed by heart failure. He was getting better after each surgery they did on his pancreas but then all of a sudden crashed at about 2:30 PM and died a few minutes later. :(

But was he a drinkin' man? I temped as a substitute for a guy who was out on a medical for this for a couple months last year, got curious and read up - 60 % of Acute Pancreatitis cases stem from alcahol abuse - something to do with a beatup liver backing bile up into the pancreas. Sad to say, my man is still drinkin', and he's still out sick a couple days a week, and lookin pretty bleak the rest of the time.

Both my mom and I wondered the same thing, but the docs say alcohol didn't cause it. He had a heart attack a couple of years ago and was taking Lipitor because of it, But I don't know if drug interactions played any part.

But in addition to "my man", I had an alky neighbor up home who hung himself because of the pain. But you are likely right, cuz' both those guys were "professionals".
FWIW, lots of folks have dicey liver or kidney function for years, and don't know - was he on any NSAIDS, especially strong ones?
Answers will help some, but, as you're findin' out, there ain't no gettin' over, there's just livin' with. I lost my Dad to mestastized lung cancer 10 years ago - long after he quit smoking. Sad, sad day.

NSAID's seem to be causing so many problems...i have digestive problems, which have gotten much worse all of a sudden, and have taken motrin for back/ortho problems for several years. also take Rx prevacid for GERD and was dx'd as borderline diabetic. i'm wondering if the motrin has exacerbated these symptoms. their use has exploded over the years because they work.

All the ad's tout it as safe, but read the label - overdoses, or use in conjunction with alcohol can kill your liver. And they put it in a bunch of OTC cold remedies 'n stuff, with very minimal labeling....
