The Ultimate Sitcom of all time - UK or US
The top twenty sitcoms as voted for by insiders, such as writers, producers and experts, and not based on overall popularity.

http://www.listology.com/list/channel-4s-ultimate-sitcom

1. Frasier (US)
2. Fawlty Towers (UK)
3. Seinfeld (US)
4. Porridge (UK)
5. The Larry Sanders Show (US)
6. The Phil Silvers Show (US)
7. Dad's Army (UK)
8. Blackadder (UK)
9. Spaced (UK)
10. The Office (UK)
11. Father Ted (UK/IRL)
12. Cheers (US)
13. I'm Alan Partridge (UK)
14. Yes Minister (UK)
15. Curb Your Enthusiasm (US)
16. The Good Life (UK)
17. The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin (UK)
18. Hancock's Half Hour (UK)
19. Rising Damp (UK)
20. The Young Ones (UK)

I'm surprised Curb Your Enthusium fared so poorly though to be fair, I haven't sampled all of the shows listed above it. However, I would certainly place it above Cheers.

I have no argument with the top three which probably means that I need to check out #4 Porridge.

5. 15 minutes of "The Young Ones" = more humor than all of Frasier combined.
And I'm not just saying that due to Kelsey Grammer being a certifiable Bewshbot.

The Young Ones and AbFab at least belong in the top 10.

7. I know Channel 4 is a British network so the list has a slight UK bias...
but Father Ted and I'm Alan Partridge are 2 of the funniest shows ever. Surprised to see Frasier as #1, it was funny but funniest of all time? I disagree...

11. Like West Wing and Sopranos, Frasier had tremendous UK ratings
and that was despite Daphne's family where everyone had a different OTT accent for some reason.

13. The first season of WKRP was hilarious.
After that, they started getting preachy. and it turned me off. Remember that stupid episode when Andy didn't want Venus dating her sister? Norman Lear already had that crap covered, and he did it a lot better.

10. Lot's of generational bias there.
No Jack Benny Show? No I Love Lucy? No All in the Family? No Bob Newhart?

22. Done for a British TV channel, so probably British people voting on it
based mainly on what they'll have seen - which professionally might be slightly wider than what was shown in Britain, but not much. 'All In The Family' was a remake of the British show 'Till Death Us Do Part', and didn't, as far as I know, air in the UK at all; Jack Benny may not have aired here either, or earlier Bob Newhart (that sitcom he did in charge of a hotel or something did, but that was quite late and forgettable). I Love Lucy/other Lucy shows haven't been on here for a long time, and were never 'big' here.

Of what is in the list, there's Phil Silvers (which got repeats for decades afterwards here), and Hancock - which is basically the founding British TV sitcom, from the late 50s/early 60s. Dad's Army was late 60s /early 70s; and there are 5 other 70s series in that list.

29. I can't believe "Taxi" didn't even make the top 20.
That show was a weekly "event"! Latka's cookies, Louie's date with Elaine, Alex hooks up with his ex-wife, Jim takes his driver's test, etc...:)

I'd probably vote "WKRP" second, "Cheers" third. I must admit to not having seen the British comedies, though.

19. Why did/do people love Frasier?
I've seen a few episodes and didn't find it even a little funny. No way should it be number 1.

23. 'Good Neighbors' would seem to be the US name for 'The Good Life'
which did turn up in the list: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075511/

'All In The Family' was a remake of 'Till Death Us Do Part' (and so not shown in the UK), and TDUDP is probably more known for being daring than 'technically good', which I think people in the business might go for more.

AbFab has its moments, and I'd guess it would be close to the top 20; Barney Miller probably never aired in the UK. Was it really good? I haven't heard many people rave about it.
