Poll question: Should Velma watch "Schindler's List" tonight?
I bought it on dvd a couple of days ago. I've been watching the special features and getting myself psyched up to actually watch the movie. (I know it's gona tear me up.)

Anyway, I pulled a muscle in my thigh last night so I'm not going to the gym tonight and I've got plenty of free time to watch it. But...it means spending 3 WHOLE HOURS away from DU. *gasp...the horror*

So, what do y'all think?

4. Makes me depressed too...
but it's a wonderful movie. I'm kind of in the mood to watch it and just sob...just couldn't decide and whenever you have a difficult little life question you can always ask in the Lounge. :-)

7. I've only seen it once...
in the movie theater when it came out. I started crying about 10 minutes in and didn't stop for the entire rest of the movie. Scared teh bejezus outta my boyfriend at the time. He kept asking if I was ok and I kept telling him I was fine and to shut up so I could watch the movie.

My other possible option for tonight is to take myself to Return of the King.

5. No, those movies should be watched during the day....
...not in the evening. If you like it, you'll lose sleep.

Quite frankly, I never "got" SL. Still think Spielberg is an amatuer director.

6. It Didn't Depress Me
I'm Jewish & went to a private Jewish school growing up, so I was raised knowing about the worst of the Holocaust. I found the movie kind of uplifting. To know that in the midst of all that horror, there were still good people... Schindler was particularly compelling because he didn't try to act like a saint.

to see how regular people are capable of the most horrible evil but also the most incredible grace.

36. damn
that is. I had figured it would be around $50 or so. That is what most of the classics that have come to DVD have cost.

9. Every time I see
that girl in the red dress I weep unabashedly. If you're going to see it, be certain your tissue supply is up to the task. And remember we'll be open late if you need humanity-hugs later in the evening.

14. I always thought the decision...
to film in black and white was the right one. Makes the image of that little girl in the red coat so much more powerful.

If I do watch it I'm sure I'll be back later for lots of hugs.

Here's one in advance for you for thinking about that.

15. Yup it's on dvd
Got me the widescreen version. I've been watching the special features...there's some good stuff from the Survivors of the Shoah group that Spielberg is part of - where they did all the visual histories.

19. I don't think I'll buy the DVD
It's a great movie, but not one I want to watch more than a few times. Believe me, it all sunk in the first time. I've seen it a few times on Cable, and I'm sure I'll watch it again when it's on.

My eyes have crossed from researching arcane Federal and State regulations. Ugh...I never quite was able to answer the question fully though. That just drives me nuts!

Monday will either be really good, or it will suck ass. :D

22. Yeah, go for it, Vel. But bring someone to cuddle up with.
It's a tough one to sit through. Magnificent movie, though. Liam Neeson and Ben Kingsley have rarely been as good, or better. And the scene with the girl in the red dress IS a heart-wrencher. I've never met a Holocaust-denier (thank God!) but I would simply ask him, 'How could anyone MAKE THIS STUFF UP?" It beggars the imagination.

You've seen it, so you know what I'm talking about. Put on a laugher or something; GalaxyQuest, or L.A. Story. Something to make you feel good.

28. "L.A. Story" makes me cry
I haven't been able to watch it since the ex and I broke up...it was one of our favorite movies to watch together. :-( That and "Dead Again".

I've been feeling like a good cry all day (I'm as hormonal as I ever get) so I'm thinking this might just be the right moment. If I get to watching it and it's more than I can deal with...I'll bug out and go see Return of the King at 9 at the movie theater near my house. :)

30. If it's a good cry you need, then L.A. Story is the one for you.
When the highway traffic sign gets its voice back and plays "Amazing Grace", I always well up. I'm a sucker for 'Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, with orchestral accompaniment. Also, the scene where they walk through that magic garden to the tune of Enya's 'On your Shore'. Breathtaking. And then, of course, that wonderful scene where everything he promised to do to prevent her plane from taking off actually happens! Incredible.

33. It's almost enough to convince me...but,
sadly, my ex got our copy of "L.A. Story" in the breakup. I haven't been able to make myself buy another copy.

Anyway, it's 7pm here and the voting seems to be heavily in favor of "Schindler's List" so I'm gonna start it and see what happens. Back after a while.

29. It's the best Hollywood film of the '90s, bar none!
And would almost certainly go on a list of my ten favorite films of all time. I can never get through the last scene (at Oskar Schindler's grave) without crying.

31. I certainly am not gonna argue with that
It is THE movie I remember from the 90s that's for sure.

I just finished re-reading "Schindler's Ark"...the book that prompted Spielberg to make the movie. Currently I'm about a third of the way through another book, "The Third Reich: A New History". Hard reading, just like "Schindler's List" is hard watching, but worth it.
