Back to the time warp - LOUDEST 60's/early 70's band

that you've seen.

Mine is: Blue Cheer

Nobody else even close. Pink Floyd were brutally loud (during the Syd Barrett days), The Who were obscenely loud, but Blue Cheer were just unbelieveable. I saw them in '68, in a 3000 seat venue. They had Marshalls stacked three high - 18(!) for the guitarist alone. Geez, even the drummer had 6 of 'em!

BTW, for those wanting to know, Hendrix was loud, but not out of the ordinary.

1. Aren't Blue Cheer actually in the Guinness book as the loudest band?
Edited on Fri Mar-12-04 08:15 PM by Feanorcurufinwe
The Who were the loudest I've seen, but only in a small venue, in a coliseum sized venue they seemed about the same as most... in that little theatre though, it seems like they had the same sound system set to the same level... my friend and I leaving the show:

me: "THAT WAS GREAT BUT MY EARS WON'T STOP RINGING!"

him: "WHAT?"

me: "WHAT?"

5. If not, they sure have my vote

I literally couldn't hear for almost 24 hours after that show.

I think their manager said of them - "they turn the air to cottage cheese."

12. I saw both BC and The Who in the same size venue
and then The Who again in a large outdoor venue, and at Woodstock.

In the smaller venues, at least you could here the vocals through the PA - with Blue Cheer you thought somebody was singing, but you couldn't really tell... :)

7. The Who taught me to always bring earplugs
and if I was caught without them, it's cheaper to shred a dollar bill and stuff it in your ears than to treat the subsequent deafness!

8. Did you ever see King Crimson?
I've been told they were incredibly loud also by people who were there.
I saw Fripp solo a couple of years ago and just by himself doing his soundscapes is pretty damn loud.

13. Yes, during the "In The Court Of The Crimson King" period

I'd forgotten that one. They were very loud as well, especially when sitting in a converted gym (with hay on the floor!) in the summer - no windows!

Hammond B-3's and those V/T horns made for quite the ear-splitting racket.

They'd make the top five, I'll bet.

20. Not from the 60's/70's, but...
...I saw Coroner, Atrophy, and Forced Entry, three of the loudest, fastest, underground, hardcore speed metal bands at the time, at a dinky little club in DC. I spent the entire show hunched over the guitarists' stage monitors, banging my head, about 3 feet from both the drum kit and the guitar stacks. My ears rang for 3 days. I remember waking up the third day, still hearing a slight ring (thankfully not as loud as the day before), and thinking, "so this is what Pete Townsend listens to all day..."

23. Ted Nugent
was the loudest I ever saw. Led Zeppelin was loud, but nowhere approaching Nugent. A Black Sabbath concert made my head hurt, but still wasn't nearly as loud as Nugent.
