"Waiting for Guffman" , now on to "School of Rock"

A comedy double feature was sorely needed. Intermission time. Drinks a mixing. "This bulging river..." being sung by me and my sweetie.

1. God sent this movie from heaven
My kid (seven), doesn't want to know anything about my music, especially rock 'n roll.

Until I took her to see "School of Rock."

I bought the DVD last week, and she has watched it at LEAST twenty times. They talk about "Dark Side of the Moon" in the movie; this afternoon, she listened to the whole thing with me, finally. They play a couple of Ramones songs; she's been listening to the Ramones all week long (and, thanks to "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg," is learning to hate and fear Republicans).

She wants a guitar for her birthday.

Jack Black is the greatest thing to ever happen to our little two-person household.

2. hmm I've been wondering if my nearly 8 year old son
would want to see School of Rock. I've been hinting to him that he might. Haven't played most Ramones songs for him, but he has heard some of Don't Worry About Me. He liked Mr. Punchy. Wasn't sure if he was really ready for stuff we listen to... but then my husband plays lots of interesting stuff such as Television, They Might Be Giants, the Bangles and Tuvan throat singing all evening long. SO maybe he is. Plus he likes Captain Beefheart. So.

Good for you and her. That's neat.

3. It got a PG-13 instead of a PG
As best as I can tell, because Jack Black tels kids NOT to use drugs (there are a couple of "damns," though). The MPAA wouldn't know reality if it bit them on the ass...

4. glad you brought up the rating
Noticed the PG-13, and I had a hard time figuring that out myself. The fact that he hungover twice in a "kid's movie"? Then there's the Joan Cusak scene in the bar too. They both drink a beer. Other than that, even the "damn"s don't seem to warrant a PG-13, do they? Really confused. I wonder what the spectrum is, the closest other edge PG-13 out there.
