What's up with Publix?
I went grocery shopping today at Publix and noticed this weird new policy of the store toward's mainstream women's magazines and tabloids: their covers are shielded by a white plastic cover which only allows you to view, slightly, the top of the magazine. Now, I can somewhat understand the desire to want to shield young readers from what is on the front of the tabloids. (Although my school-teacher parents might disagree. Their contention is: let them read whatever they want. It leads to more reading). But why cover SELF magazine and InStyle? No nudity. Not that much skin. And no salacious articles advertising sex secrets on the front. As a woman, I'm insulted by those who find even a glimpse of our bodies to be shameful. What's going on here? Is this the new American Taliban? Now I understand John Ashcroft felt the need to cover up Lady Justice's long exposed breasts. (isn't that symbolic...covering up a symbol of justice!). But that man has serious psychological issues with women. Why is Publix afraid of children seeing Uma Thurman in a floral dress or a SELF model looking more covered up than the average girl at the mall? What's next? We let Ashcroft design a mandatory Middle Eastern inspired uniform for all American females?

1. Is it owned by Kroger?
Kroger started a policy of 'masking' Cosmopolitan magazine because of local 'morals' groups whining and twitching about the 'racy' covers. Of course, in my neighborhood, what happens is that 'somebody' (whose name is Mr. Nownow) goes around and moves one copy of Cosmo out in front of the blinders on each magazine rack, every time he's in the store. It's a harmless little bit of civil disobedience that the store doesn't seem to care about -- they never replace the magazines.

It's caught on, apparently -- the last time we were in there, every single one already had a magazine standing in front of it, and we hadn't been in there for over a week, so he's not the only one.

They haven't tried to 'blinder' any of the others at Kroger yet, but that doesn't mean other chains haven't caught hell for the same thing and don't feel compelled to foam-pad the world to suit the same group of people, though.

3. Yeah, My Publix is weird too
Today the covers of Newsweek and Cooking Light were concealed, and the Redbook and Cosmo with the covers advertising "Twenty Sex Secrets!" were out in the open.
I think the customers move those plastic shields around just to mess with the fundies' heads.
Or maybe the Cooking Light had a recipe for sexually explicit linguine.
