Poll question: Best song from the bubblegum era?
Edited on Sat Mar-13-04 11:11 PM by mac56
Yes. Bubblegum. Often maligned, but a guilty pleasure for many of us. (Lester Bangs, for example.) Hey, not everybody was ready for the Grateful Dead or Moby Grape in 1968.

Any other fans of the gummy stuff?

3. Proud to vote: They all sucked. Yummy, yummy, yummy.
All were bad, and I suspect George W. Bush liked and listened to them all, which may explain a lot. Meanwhile, Cheney was a Black Sabbath fan; the combination of the two explains a lot more, even.

15. Great poll, though. Bad music, but great poll.
What was it by the Cowsills - "The Wind, the Rain, and Other Things?" ("Suddenly the sun broke through - see the sun - and in her eyes I was gone. . ." Something like that). Oh well, to bed, and tomorrow is another day ("Sunday will never be the same.")

5. Would the Music Explosion's "Little Bit O' Soul" qualify as bubblegum?
If so, that's my choice. If not, then it all sucked!

10. I never thought of "Green Tambourine" as bubblegum.
I liked that song; might even have the 45, I'm not sure. The rest of the group, I've always hated.

13. Leslie Gore and Little Peggy March and recording artists of that ilk
were Bubblegum. About the only songs you have up there that qualify as bubblegum are Sugar, Sugar and Yummy, Yummy, Yummy.

The others were considered pop or soft rock.

I know. I was there...

14. Everyone has their own defintion, I guess.
Edited on Sat Mar-13-04 11:35 PM by mac56
One person's soft rock is another person's bubblegum.

I was there too.

add on definition: Maybe if I like it, it's soft rock; if I don't, it's bubblegum. Or as my wife often tells me on cleanup day: my stuff; your crap!

22. Perhaps, but I was going by what the D.J.s of the day called it.
It was mostly very young artists... young enough to still be considered the Bubblegum set.

And I liked Bubblegum music. Still do for that matter. It was for fun and not to be taken seriously.

16. "Judy In Disguise" ?
Surely would qualify...right period, right kind of song. I loved it. Of your choices, I voted for "Yummy, Yummy, Yummy." I liked that one, too. Also "Incense and Peppermints" by Strawberry Alarm Clock. It was a playful era, and oh, man, did we ever PLAY!

21. Bubblegum is great, subversive stuff
And don't let anybody tell ya different. The Philistines!

Here's a few that didn't make the list: (not K&K i realize)

Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated

Paul Revere & the Raiders - It's Happening

Sweet - Ballroom Blitz

Tommy James & the Shondells - Hanky Panky

The Music Explosion - Sunshine Games

Generation X - Ready Steady Go

Annnnd if you really dig the Gum, check out 'Bubblegum Music Is The Naked Truth'. Another fine Feral House publication.
