My poor little brother

My mom left town for a week on business so he has been all alone. Today he sprained the crap out of his ankle playing indoor soccer, and when he got home the oil heater had stopped working so the house was freezing.

I only like 20 minutes away so I have been on call while my mother is out of town, but I was incommunicado and engaged for most of the day. When he finally got me today he was crying because of the pain.

When I got to the house he was in the process of crawling from his bed room to the living room on the hope that it might be warmer in there. So I did the only thing a good big brother can do, pointed and laughed at him.

Don't worry I've taken care of things and I am going to forgo a bit of my spring break to stay with him (drive him around and such) until my mother gets home or he feels better. I am also going to take him to the hospital tomorrow because I think it might be a break and not a sprain.

He is a giant 16 year old

My mother wanted him to stay with some friends or with me, but she let him decide and he wanted to stay at home.

a 16 year old should NOT be left home alone for a week. I suspect child welfare would be not too pleased to find out about this. Plus, it's pretty stupid. Surely there were friends he could have stayed with.

I have a 16 year old myself, and there's no way on god's green earth I'd leave him on his own for a week. Good grief!

16. When I was his age I got a job and lived alone for a summer

My family moved and I decided that I didn't want to go until the next school year to live with them. They didn't want me to, but the found out there was nothing they could do to stop me.

18. How long ago was this?

I was employed full-time and moved away from home at age 17 myself, but that was nearly 40 years ago now. I don't think anyone would rent an apartment to someone that young anymore.

I know that kids vary tremendously in maturity, especially at that age, but I still don't think that these days it's a good idea for a kid of 16 to be completely on his own for more than a couple of days.

Admittedly, my perception is skewed because my oldest at age 21 is not capable of being on his own because he's mildly autistic (Asperger's) and I do find myself quite surprised on occasion to see how much more capable his age mates are, and have been all along.

I've been home alone for week or two at a time. I'm 16. I see nothing wrong with this. Do tell the great problems.

If the he knows where his parent is there is no problem with it that I can see. Although I am much too overprotective to see myself being able to do it. :hi:

He told me that the doctor at the soccer center assured him it wasn't broken, but I want to get and x-ray to make sure because it looks pretty ugly.

Without an x-ray, I don't think they can always be sure (although I'm not a medical professional, by any means). I'd want to be sure, too. He's lucky to have a brother like you.

10. I love the kid to death

even though he is now six foot one (a whole inch taller then me)with his little facial hair comming in, I still see the little kid that used to climb on me like I was a jungle gym.

You did exactly what my big brothers would've done.

Poor kid.. probably tore or sprained a ligament. Hurts worse than a break.
