Woody Guthrie avatars, check in here . . .
tell us where you're from, and why you chose Woody for your avatar . . .

I'm Michael, from the lower Hudson Valley in NY . . . I chose Woody because I used to work with Pete Seeger on the Clearwater project, and during that time I learned a lot about Woody and his music . . . I think "This Land Is Your Land" should be the national anthem . . .

1. Oregon
First song I learned in school was "Roll On, Columbia" in the second grade. I can still knock out a good version on my Sears, Roebuck guitar.

I'd go along with your national anthem suggestion in a heartbeat.

Woody told it like it was. His life, cut tragically short, was amazing. I have relatives who came west during the dust bowl years.

Cool you got to work with Pete Seeger.

2. I'm from California
I love folk music and have since I was in my teens. In those days, I was supposed to like British rock groups. Sorry, I told my friends, I like something else.

Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land should be our national anthem.

Above all, I believe folk music represents the august dignity of that which is simple. One can go a long ways with a 1-4-5 blues progression.

Guthrie's songs represent democratic themes at their best. Take, for example, the last two verses of The Ballad of Pretty Boy Floyd:

(G)All through this world you'll travel,
(C)You'll meet a lot of funny (G)men --
Some will
(C)rob you with a (D7)six gun
And
(C)some with a (D7)fountain (G)pen.

(G)All through this world you'll ramble,
(C)All through this world you'll (G)roam --
You'll
(C)never see an (D7)outlaw
Drive a
(C)poor family (D7)from their (G)home.

3. Didn't know we had one. But "This Land" should be the anthem!
I'm a HUGE fan of both Woody and Pete.

I'm also the resident ex co-host of the Guy James Show and an ardent Socialist:-)

5. I'll miss my radio-active avatar...
Why? Beats me but it always said "BOOM" I guess:shrug:

That said Woody says "BOOM" in a much more humanistic voice I think.

6. St. Paul, Minnesota
Picked Woody because I love his music, and I love his message. 'Jesus Christ' and '1918 Massacre' are two songs I wouldn't be the same without.

7. He's not my avatar, BUT . . .
he is in my sig on another forum:

"We got out to the West Coast broke,
So dad-gum hungry I thought I'd croak,
An' I bummed up a spud or two,
An' my wife fixed up a tater stew --
We poured the kids full of it,
Mighty thin stew, though,
You could read a magazine right through it.
Always have figured
That if it'd been just a little bit thinner,
Some of these here politicians
Coulda seen through it."

Woody was one of the greats alright.
