Poll question: Most tolerable Republican president since the First World War
Either Eisenhower or Ford... probably Eisenhower.

20. Give 'em a break
It wasn't me, because I haven't even voted in this poll, but
When I first saw this thread I assumed that it said "Most INtolerable . . ." It never even occured to me that you could use the word "tolerable" as a descriptor for a Republican.

Could have been just confused what he/she was voting on.

Or maybe their computer is possessed like mine and has gone over to the dark side. If I had a job I'd get another computer.
. . . . . . . :argh:

I guess if I had to choose, I would go with Gerald Ford because he had less time in there than any of the others. To that extent he was LESS INTOLERABLE than the others.

:bounce:

Gee, even I couldn't remain a nominal Republican when it became glaringly obvious what an ass * is.

I wasn't around for Eisenhower. As for Nixon and Reagan -- I can only ask, how did this country endure them without imploding?

For being a horrible president who isn't tolerable. Compared to him, most of the other Republican presidents weren't that bad.

17. His farewell speech
needs to be repeated continually in the months ahead. He predicted where we are now. Manufacturing conflicts in order to keep the military industrial complex rolling in dough. Ike would detest what this administration has done.

10. Gerald Ford was a very underestimated man and a classy guy
Yes, he was a conservative and, no, I didn't agree with him much. However, he wasn't like the current GOP pissants.

11. I liked Ike as well
He wasn't a complete angel. (Just look up his support of nuclear weapons testing on American citizens.) But he was NO chickenhawk, either. And when it came to war, his philosophy was to get it over quickly with as few casualties as possible.

And he was the one leader who warned us of the dangers of the military-industrial complex. He should know, and he was dead right about that.

Edited on Sun Mar-14-04 09:43 PM by elperromagico
and didn't seem prone to the dirty tricks of his successors (Nixon, Reagan, and the Bushes). What's more, the release of his diaries reveal that he was not as bumbling as he sometimes seemed.

in order of preference: 1. George W. Bush, 2. Richard Milhous Nixon, 3. Ronnie Raygun.

27. Ike
he's one of only three Republican presidents I would give a passing grade, the other two being Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. Ford was tolerable, but he barely did anything.
