Poll question: BEST NUMBER 2 HIT of the EARLY 1960s? (Part Two)
I inadvertently called yesterday's poll "Part 2." Actually, that was Part 1. Oops!

1. And here's what kept those songs off #1
Edited on Mon Mar-15-04 10:42 AM by NightTrain
I LIKE IT LIKE THAT - "Tossin' and Turnin'," Bobby Lewis

THE MOUNTAIN'S HIGH - "Take Good Care Of My Baby," Bobby Vee :puke:

CRYING - "Hit The Road Jack," Roy Orbison

BRISTOL STOMP - "Runaround Sue," Dion

CAN'T HELP FALLING IN LOVE - "Peppermint Twist," Joey Dee

THE WANDERER - "Duke of Earl," Gene Chandler

MASHED POTATO TIME - "Soldier Boy," The Shirelles

THE WAH WATUSI - "Roses Are Red," Bobby Vinton :puke:

YOU DON'T KNOW ME - "Sheila," Tommy Roe

ONLY LOVE CAN BREAK A HEART - "He's A Rebel," The Crystals*

*Written by Gene Pitney, which means his own song kept him from reaching #1! :eyes:

3. Had to go with Roy again.
To be fair, "Hit the Road, Jack" is a damn fine ditty.

I also must admit that I have a soft spot in my heart for the "Bristol Stomp" -- even though every objective, rational jack in my aesthetic house of cards tells me it's a crap song, I still love it.

5. "The kids in Bristol are sharp as a pistol."
Can someone please tell me what the fuck that means? Goddamn, "Visions of Johanna" is less oblique.

Either whoever wrote that is a genius on a par with Spector circa "Do the Screw," or millions of record-buyers were wrecked on Placidyls and speed when they shopped.

As I tend to be wrecked on alcohol and caffeine when I listen (and sing, and dance) to that song, I can see their point.

7. Ain't too many words that rhyme with "Bristol!"
What did you want them to sing? "The kids in Bristol are clean as a whistle?" :boring:
