My 85-year-old father is having hip replacement surgery
today at 2PM PDT. He's very healthy, so it should go just fine, but if you can spare a minute around then, think a good thought for him.

I'll be flying out on Saturday to stay a few days and help out as I can. Fortunately my sister and brother live in the same town.

He's a WWII B-17 pilot and a granite pillar in my life.

7. I've had two total hip replacements...
...and the new technology in hip replacement is amazing! Not to worry. They will probably start him taking small steps the day of surgery. As long as he does his physical therapy exercises....and paces himself....he will be fine.

My doctor always reminded me that Mother Nature heals at her own pace....so don't try to get better FASTER...just let the healing take place on its own. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to be pain-free. (And do not compare your healing to anyone else's healing!) We are all unique.

Make sure he gets plenty of rest, too. Therapy can be exhausting in the beginning.

It is wonderful that he has his family's support. I'm sending good thoughts to all of you. :hi:

17. That surgery is routine now,
and they can get the whole thing done in 90 minutes or so. He'll be up and working with physical therapists in a couple of days. The recovery from that procedure is speedy to the point of being unbelievable. He'll be walking with a walker in a week, and he's gonna be just fine. Some time with a cane, but the more he walks, the faster he'll heal.

A good 81-year-old friend of mine had the surgery a year ago, and he was back at his medical practice - he's a dermatologist, and on his feet all day - within two months.

So, here's to your Dad, with every good wish in the world!!!

21. Surgery's over, and everything went fine.
He's in a regular room and Mom, brother, and sister are there with him. I'll be there Saturday, and he should get out of the hospital that day or Sunday. Good stuff.

26. He'll be fine. And once he recovers from the operation his hip will not hurt him at all.
It is amazing what they can do these days.
