Right...so my kid's school had a bomb threat today....
Apparently it was called in Fri. after school hours, and they were kind enough to leave a voice mail (:eyes:) saying it was there. The message was discovered early this morning, approx. 8:30AM. At that point, the kids were left IN THE CLASSROOMS while the school was searched. Upon finding nothing by 11:30AM, they decided to evacuate and actually search the classrooms.

:wtf:

Is this standard procedure? Needless to say I'm more than a tad annoyed/perplexed by this. I'm off to search the school board site to see if by chance there actually is an explanation for this, but honestly, even if this IS standard it seems to be pretty irresponsible.

(Nothing was found, and I guess two 7th grade girls have been caught/confessed...)

1. sounds like a 'cry wolf' scenario
as if they are avoiding the appearance of 'rewarding' the presumed student threat-makers by letting them get out of school...?

it might not be a bad idea to fire off a letter to the board, too

2. in our town's high school
there have been recurring rashes of bomb threats. They are required to take it seriously, and to evacuate the school immediately. Major pain in the ass, and a lot of lost school hours, but they do not play around with this. If I were you, I would lodge a protest.

5. I *really* try
not to be one of *those* parents, y'know...but I mean my god! What if there actually HAD been something there?! I realize the goal of our education system these days has been reduced to a mass production mentality but c'mon...some things are more important.

Also, there is nothing posted on the school board's site regarding such procedures, so you can be sure they're hearing from me in the morning.

13. It used to be really bad..
In the Marinette, WI and Menominee, MI a few years ago. There were about ten or twelve bomb threats within a three month period. Each time the schools were completley evaced. They eventually caught the people responsible and expelled them They got to be such a problem that Our Assembly rep John Gard was wrote a bill that would have forced any juvinille that called in a bomb threat to a school wait until the age of 18 to get their driver's liscence. Anyone already holding their liscense would have it revoked until age 18.

7. Back in the Dark Ages ...
..well 1978 - a kid set a pipe bomb off in a locker at my High School. No injuries, but it sure messed up the locker & surroundings. Mr. K, our AVC teacher and former POW, barely reacted when the boooom went off - called it an early Greek Easter.

Guess what? It didn't make the major papers and it didn't make TV - imagine that today. No evacuation, no lock-down, no called parents - just a call to police and the perp was caught later.

By the way - no phone warning.

4. I would be upset. I shudder to think if the threat were real. What
were they thinking, leaving the kids in the class? Why have fire drills? You have every right to be angry, and I'd be asking for answers.

 Glad all was okay.

10. Personally, you're 1000000% right to be upset -
if it had been my daughter's school, I'd be on the phone to every member of the board and demand they develop a policy regarding this type of threat. :wtf::mad::wtf:

These threats are VERY real today - especially when kids can learn to build bombs in the comfort of their own bedrooms.

dolo, do call the school board and principal. If nothing else, it will make YOU feel better! :grouphug:

11. Thanks northofdenali

I feel the same way. The more I think about it, that's just ridiculous. What could possibly take precedent over the student's LIVES, fer chrissake? Obviously as there was no bomb, they weren't in imminent danger, but before they KNEW THAT FOR SURE, not evacuating the school could've been a big fat butt-load of negligence suits HAD THERE BEEN ANYTHING, no? You'd thing if for no other reason than that they'd want to cover their asses...:eyes:

Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 12:35 AM by Endangered Specie
We were taking math EOG exams... still had to stay and take the test... course, I was in the room with the two people I thought most likely to wanna blow up the school... so, If they left, I was oughta there.

In HS: bomb threats were total evac, however, once, they said it would go bomb at time x... so, they only evaced when it was 5mins before time x

stupid... not only could they intentionally set the time off, or they could be dumb enough to be off by 5-10mins.
