I've got crab(s)!!!
Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 12:51 AM by PROUD DemocRAT
mmmmmmm! I'm in the middle of an ongoing housecall computer setup/configure/transfer of files from the oldie moldy with one of our internet customers. I am not going to charge him until all is said and done, and then my rate will be, as always - VERY reasonable.

So tonight after work I went over there (for the second time) to help him get his new one set up, configured for internet, etc (the first time the onboard video was broken out of the box, so he had to wait for a replacement).

We still haven't discussed any sort of payment - and won't until he's satisfied that all of his questions have been answered and we're done.

So tonight, as I was leaving, he asks if I like crab. I LOVE crab - even though I consider myself veg I will still eat fish/seafood on occasion. He recently bought 30 live crabs fresh off the boat in Seattle, and had cleaned and cooked them all. Left in the fridge he had a ziploc bag full of loose crab meat, and a bigger ziploc filled with legs and claws. He insisted I take them as I left. YUMMY!

I get a lot of crap from friends and family because I don't charge what others in the business do for computer repair and help - but let me tell you, being reasonable REALLY pays off for me. And even better, it pays off in a way that my customers feel GOOD about. I've had someone send $100 to my vet to be placed on my account, I've had an old man bring me flowers at work, I've had 2 awesome homebaked cakes delivered to me at the office, and a huge tub of homemade caramel corn. I had a guy make me a really cool ceramic tile with Horus on it, and quite often, I get paid more money by my customers than I charged them. The best part about it all is that I feel GOOD because I know I'm beyond reasonable and not raping people for profit, and THEY feel good giving me more because they WANT to, and not because I tell them they owe it to me.

I just had to share that - I'm feeling pretty good about my crab bounty right now. :)

edited to add - I forgot, I also recently got 2 free movie passes from someone that stopped by while I was at lunch and dropped them on my desk.

2. I love to get crabs, too.
But, they're running $5.99 a pound at the market. UGH!

So, lately, I've gone without. Woe is me.

But, your post was a Neptune's Delight!

Thank you.

4. You can come over for dinner!

It's a lot for me to eat all by my lonesome!

I don't think I've ever had it fresh off the boat before - I was in fact joking with the guy (before he mentioned the crabs) that I'm a Michigan girl and I think Red Lobster is GREAT - not like the "seafood snobs" here in WA state. I was kidding with him - and I really do understand there is a REAL difference to them - but I'm always like "where ELSE do you get seafood but Safeway?" lol

3. Ok, you got me! Here I was, thinking of remedies
and YOU are munching on one of my favorite foods in all the world! Lucky! And yes, I enjoy the "barter" system as well - I've gotten lots of great stuff from folks just for typing letters, etc. My father-in-law (who has mild Alzheimers) is buying 2 round-trip tickets for hubby & me to go visit my Mom in Florida this summer - because I balance his checkbook and keep track of his finances.

If this economy keeps tanking (thank you Shrub) barter may be the only way we have to stay above water!

6. You're in Alaska, right?
I bet you get GREAT seafood there - and are probably one of those "seafood snobs" I mentioned above - said with the utmost of respect and good natured joshing, of course :)

I can fully appreciate those that have grown up eating fresh caught seafood and fish and their lack of appreciation for storebought flash-frozen stuff - I am not astute enought to appreciate the difference, however. At least not yet - I'm already a terrible coffee snob, maybe I will start working my way up to seafood eventually. :)

7. Most of our seafood gets shipped to the Lower 48 & Japan.
Our prices are sky-high, even during the salmon runs, unless you get your own! But, yes, what we do get is extremely fresh and flavorful, particularly the salmon and halibut. King crab is good, but doesn't have the real "crabby" flavor of Dungeness or blue crabs.

Most of the flash-frozen stuff is almost as good as fresh, I agree, and I AM a "seafood snob"!! :) :hi:

10. you mean raw?
eat em right outa the shell!

or do you mean after you cook them?

Just wondering, since I'm the type of vegan who doesn't eat shellfish anyway. :)

14. No...
you don't eat crabs raw, but you can eat them with their shells if they have just molted, and are therefore shoft-shelled crabs (in any case, you cook them first.... alive, if that offends your vegan sensibilites more) Oysters, on the other hand, those I'll eat raw!

11. I like the way you do business
What a great story. Business doesn't have to be "dog eat dog," the way republicans would have it be. Your post illustrates that it can be fun and full of surprises, too.
