What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?
Edited on Mon Jul-27-09 05:50 AM by armyowalgreens
An unstoppable force would require an infinite amount of energy. Which is not possible in a finite universe.

What would a finite universe be contained inside of? Anything that contains the universe must be part of the universe. Otherwise it would not exist and therefore not have the capacity to contain.

But if the universe IS infinite, than there is a possibility of a force with infinite energy. That would require that the force constitutes all of the infinite universe. Meaning that if such a force exists, we are a part of said force.

An immovable object would have infinite mass. Which means that the object is the whole of the universe and the whole of the universe is the object.

The unstoppable force and the immovable object can only exist as one. They are the same. The universe is both an immovable force and an unstoppable object.

Edited:

If the universe is infinite, how can it move? What does it move into? If it is an unstoppable force, where does it move? Where does the mass move?

If it can move, it means that it is contained. It is finite. Therefore, the initial question is a paradox.

If it is infinite, it cannot move and the initial question is a paradox.

According to logic, existence must be infinite, but it also must be finite.

There is no answer. My initial conclusion was wrong. There can be no answer. Any answer defies the question and therefore defies the answer.

3. All I wanna know is...
where does "space" end, and what is beyond that...kinda' like those Russian "nesting dolls."

My mind cannot deal with the concept of infinite space.

4. It's a paradox. There must be infinite existence. But there must also be finite existence.
The answer is outside the human understanding. We are finite beings and therefore our perspective is limited. We cannot fully grasp or calculate infinity.

5. Also, this entire thing can be used to discuss God.
According to my OP, God cannot possibly exist, but must exist.

If God is a being, God is finite. God is contained. Therefore God is limited, which defies the very purpose for calling God, God. God can only exist as the whole of the universe. The universe is God and God is the universe. That means that I am god. You are also God.

Infinite knowledge and infinite capability defy each other.

Can God create a stone that is so heavy that it cannot be moved, even by God?

God must be able to create a stone that is so heavy that even God cannot move it. After all, God is infinitely capable. But that would also mean that god is not infinitely capable because the stone cannot be moved.

9. Space doesn't end at any place.
It is a finite, yet unbounded thing. If it makes no sense, just keep in mind that our primate brains did not have to deal with cosmology during our evolution.

7. An unimaginable thing happens.
The universe is finite, but very big with no edges or boundries. Kind of like how the surface of the Earth is finite but has no edge.

Consequently, the mass is finite and so is the energy available in it.

The question itself is a paradox because it presupposes two things that cannot exist. It is a good reminder that just because a question can be phrased into a grammatically correct sentence does not mean it is a valid question.

10. Infinite in what dimensions?
Edited on Mon Jul-27-09 01:09 PM by RandomThoughts
Height?
Width?
Length?
Temporal?

Other dimensions?

The amount of dimensions?

Are the number of dimensions infinite?

Also...

An unstoppable object can exist in a finite system, it only has to have more force then the combine ability of the rest of the universe to theoretically stop it. Any object with 51% of all energy in a finite system would be unstoppable by any combination within that finite system.

An immovable object would only need to have an inertial resistance greater then any force that could be applied to it within a finite system, infinite would not be required. Although in an infinite system the equation would not change.

Note that in the equasion you state, you make the statement of a 51%+ force, in opposition a noninertia force of 51%+ Since this equates to more then 100% it requires force from outside the finite, or infinate, system for that equasion to exist.

17. That still doesn't seem right...
because any energy that is less than infinite will eventually be spent. That means that an object with a finite mass, even if it constitutes 51% of the universe, will fall victim to entropy as the universe gets ever closer to temperature equilibrium.

It doesn't seem possible, to me at least, that there can be an unstoppable force or an immovable object in a finite universe.

12. The existence of one negates the other.
There can only be an immovable object OR an irresistable force.

15. It'll be really boring.
Either the thing moves or doesn't move, or moves in an unexpected manner. At that point, everyone starts yapping their jawbones about what it means. And they will yap until we are all dead.
