Does the word fuck offend you?

Why? Why not? Inquiring minds, etc.

What words do offend you?

1. Depends on who says it, and in what context.

14. Yup...as a word, I do not find it offensive unless it's used in a personal
attack from someone about whom I care.
I would not be offended if a repuke said 'fuck you' in the heat of a discussion; I would be terribly hurt and offended if my husband or child were to say it.

9. Yes
and I use it all the time in speech but I hate it in print. It is an ugly word. Not the deed, the word itself is ugly and has ugly conotations.

Too me its like the N word that I'd never use. It doesn't matter if the person saying it is black or brown the word still sounds Ugly.

note: DU is the first board I've ever been on, not many, that doesn't use the dirty word filter.

Like another poster has said...I still don't understand how one word can offend someone. I get called all the names under the sun, including: "dumbass," "fucker," "fucktard," "stupid fuck," "cracka," "fag lover," "tree-hugger," etc...and not one of them words or phrases offend me. I don't let them, though.

Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 11:42 AM by Rowdyboy
Fuck has been overused to the extent that it lost its edge, its meaningfullness. When it loses its power, it becomes merely tasteless and simple-minded, for those who have limited vocabularies.

That said, I still use it-but in GREAT moderation, as befits a word of power.

37. I Fully Agree
Rowdy, you hit the nail on the head. An infrequent expletive is much more effective than a habitually uttered one. When I use this one, people know I am righteously indignant, because I try not to cuss at all.

I find I am offended when every other word is a cuss word; it does't matter which word it it. I think it indicates slovenliness of thinking and lack of creativity. I also realize it is a speech habit and that habit takes considerable effort and consciousness to control.

That said, Charles Krauthammer elicits at least one good, "bullshit" from me every Saturday night when he's on my favorite talking heads show. What a maroon!

words don't usually offend me. It's the tone and intent applied to words that can offend others.

you can call someone a 'cow' for example and that is more offensive than saying 'fucking A' in gest.

Now there are certain words that can't be used no matter what.. such as the N word or C word.. those are just vulgar.

48. It's come to my attention as of late
That some women feel that the fact it is used to mean something really bad relates to men's abusive relationship with women and view of women in general. Like, women are fucked, right? By men...(in this context) And so when you say "Fuck you" and "Fuck him" to mean, I hate you/him/it -- you are just reinforcing this attitude that the woman who is fucked is garbage, and by being fucked she is made even more worthless. So these feminists say, you know, reclaim the word or dump it, but don't keep using it in both contexts. A performance artist, trying to make this point, once said: "Fuck Israel. Fuck Palestine. Fuck means peace. Fuck means peace."

Made me think a lot about my use of this word. It does come out when I get angry.

62. Exactly. I hate hearing it used in any context other than its
original meaning as a word.

But the fact that it's so widely used to put down somebody, and now even just for "emphasis", shows how much mana even the thought of sex still carries. I guess I'm coming to be more bemused than offended when I hear it. I just figure the speaker doesn't know what he/she is saying, and feel superior.

I also hate hearing words related to elimination as expletives. Just can't get that original mental image out of my mind when they're used.

But OTOH, practically any swearing involving divine figures is all right with me. I think "taking the Lord's name in vain" refers to using "God" to pull rank to further your own opinions, like Pat Robertson and Bush* do.
