Poll question: End of the world: Good thing or Bad thing
There are numerous claims that the end of the world is nigh (so rare that you get to work that word into a conversation you need to take advantage of it when you can). Some claim this is a good thing. Others fear it is a bad thing.

5. The end of the world as we know it
And I feel fine. :)

Remember, 1000 years of peace. We haven't had that yet.

9. What a great movie.
And precisely how it would go, I think. Of course we were seeing Canadians--there would be quite a bit more killing in Jesus' name in the USA before the lights went out.

Ed Wood was right: All we people of Earth are idiots! I have a friend who, like the blonde sex machine, would right up to the last hours have a problem with parting with his possessions (the car collection he doesn't wanna break up).

7. It's neither good nor bad...cosmically, it's just unimportant.
...and it depends on what "end of the world" you're talking about.

1) The end of mankind. Probably an overally healthy thing for the rest of the world. No big deal, except to us.

2) The end of the planet. Unhealthy for the planet, but no big deal, except to us and the other living things on the planet (and probably our moon).

8. I beg to differ
Even if there is other intelligent life in the universe, we are the only ones who can appreciate the beauty of the universe in a human manner.

The end of humanity would be like putting all the worlds paintings into storage. The paintings themselves would be fine, but it would be a grave injustice none the less.

10. I don't agree. With an infinite number of planets, we're sand.
I don't hear many people arguing that each grain of sand is different and must be preserved. We're nothing more than that...it just suite us to exaggerate our importance.

We could all die and the universe wouldn't even blink.

11. I didn't mean in a quantitative manner
I meant it in more of a poetic qualitative way.

What is the point of the universe, if not to be observed and appreciated. It is like the old tree in the woods falling, without anyone hearing it. The point is not if the tree makes a sound or not when it falls, the point is that it doesn't matter without someone to observe it.

I will admit that it is highly unlikely that there isn't any other life in the universe that can appreciate it. None the less, this other life would not be human, and could not appreciate the universe in a human manner. Therefor as a human that sees the beauty of the universe from a human point of view, the end of humanity would mean the end of a meaningful beautiful universe.

12. There may very well be other human inhabited planets
We just don't know yet. The universe is so vast that it boggles the mind to comprehend what could be out there. Maybe future generations will call us the flat-earthers. More than likely.

13. In that every entitity is unique, I can agree in a philosophical way, but
we're pretty unremarkable at our current stage. I can't see the cosmos caring one whit whether we live or die...

...frankly, aside from pure self-interest, I really don't, either.
