Huell Houser on acid
You'll probably only find this funny if you live in California. Huell Howser is a TV personality who has done countless documentary shows for PBS, scouring every possible corner of California for interesting places to see and people to meet. His enthusiasm for even the most trivial-seeming things makes the show come alive. He could make a 50-year old bottle cap laying by itself in a forgotten side canyon of an empty desert seem fascinating, just by his own attitude and curiosity about it. Anyway this video had me laughing from beginning to end.

3. Aw, poor Huell
Did that really happen to him? I never saw that until now.

16. I think it is various audio clips of Huell ---
slowed down a touch.

18. Somehow they slowed it down without lowering the pitch
at least to me it seems to be his normal pitch. The sound editing is good, you don't hear any clicks or starts or stops of background noises.

19. The things that make me thing it is the real deal --
are the wind sounds (his mike always sounds wind buffeted) and the slight out of breath sound he gets when he is walking and talking at the same time. My friend Jim is a sound editor -- I can ask him the technical info. :hi:

20. I believe the sound is real, it's obviously Huell's voice,
I was just commenting on the good editing job they did on the sound, it's obviously taken from several different shows but edited so well it sounds like one single recording of his voice.

7. Thanks, I'd never seen that before...
That was a classic Huell moment. Huell definitely sees the world differently than most of us do. And the guy running in the background was funny. I'm surprised Huell didn't make some kind of joke about the Spiderman toy sitting on the U.S./Mexico monument there. It was clearly sitting on the U.S. end of it, so Huell should have asked the seller, "Now, if I buy this one sitting here from you, do I have to pay California sales tax on it? Because it's in California, and I'm in California, so the sale takes place in California, so I have to pay California sales tax on it, right?" and shoves the microphone in the poor guy's face, and all he can do is meekly say, "Yes," then Huell goes into that redneck good-ol-boy laugh that he does.

9. My later Father loved Huell Howser...
He'd watch just to see Huell get all excited about some rock or random object that he'd just seen. "Now what kind of rock is this?"

My favorites are when he went to the Salton Sea and to a weekend gathering of classic trailer enthusiasts.

11. It takes a lot of guts just to go to the Salton Sea,
so I admire Huell for doing that. To me it's an awful place, especially in the summer. I'll have to try to find that episode. Thanks!

26. I like it because it is so awful.
A crusty shoreline covered with dead rotting fish at 120F with sulfurous geothermal steam bubbling out of the mud like wet farts.

That's as close to hell as you can get on earth.

27. I could not have described it better.
And don't forget all the pesticides washed into it from the farms of Imperial County, and the untreated raw sewage and heavy chemicals that flow into it from Mexico via the New River...

17. He lives in Palm Springs now, in fact,
there was a short period about 8 or 10 years ago when he was trying to run for mayor of Palm Springs (after Sonny Bono had moved on to Congress) but he gave up on it.

21. Just once I wanna hear him say "Now that is really boring."
Huell is my hero. He will try to make Turlock sound like an enchanted fantasy land with the utmost sincerity.

24. Is Turlock that bad?
Maybe Huell should do an episode on Bombay Beach, on the eastern shore of the Salton Sea. If he can find something good to say about Bombay Beach, then he deserves a Pulitzer Prize.
