A friend had Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers. What a great album. That thing was just raw, rocking blues.

5. Hound Dog Taylor was the foundation of Alligator Records.
But I voted for Otis.
There must be some other blues people here at DU on a Tuesday afternoon-these guys are truly great bluesmen from the Chicago scene.

27. I grew up in Lousiana.
I married a girl from St. Louis and she dragged me here kicking and screaming. I live in St. Louis now.

I was just going by your handle with the Louisiana thing.

Glad to meet another blues person here!

29. Otis Taylor plays jazzfest every year.
I have seen him many many times. The first time I heard someone going to see Otis Rush I thought they meant Otis Taylor. Then I saw Otis Rush myself.

30. I first saw them at SummerFest 2000 and got hooked, bad!
No drummer needed for their stuff.
My wife plays bass and Kenny Passorelli tried to lure her backstage-lol.

31. Do you live in Wisconsin?
I almost went to Summerfest last year. It looks like an awesome line-up every year. Maybe this year I will finally make it there.

I have never heard the Bel-Aires. I will look for them when I'm in NO next. I'm headed down there for jazz fest April 22-27.

32. I'm in Green Bay, but was born and raised in Milwaukee.
Used to go to Chicago a lot, lived there briefly with some other musicians- 67-68.
The Bel-Aires are from St. Louis.
Hope you do make it to SummerFest someday, it's usually hard to decide who to see there, so much talent.

33. We go to Door County every year.
My wife's family has been going there for the past fifty years. We stay in the same place off of Lake Michigan drive in Sturgeon Bay every year. You live in a very beautiful place.

My dad lives in Kenosha now. He moved there from Louisana a few years ago. He has a deep southern accent. We joked that he needed a translator to follow him around. I really like your state.

34. Door County is 40 minutes away from here. It is beautiful.
But you can't beat The Upper Mississippi Region of Wisconsin where the borders of Minnesota and Iowa are {like Vernon County, La Crosse}-there are lots of eagles, hills and The River.
They are having problems with that bridge leading into Sturgeon Bay again btw.

I gotta go now, maybe we can get together sometime when you're up here.

39. My Dad keeps a camper on the Mississippi.
We are planning on going up there to camp for a long weekend thos year. I have heard it is beautiful.

I thought the were talking about tearing down that vridge and building a new one. Sounds like they may have no choice.

My parents-in-law actually subscribe to the Door County Advocate. I bet they know the whole story.

6. Picked Otis
Like his tone and he is less sloppy. (Not that Otis is Al Dimeola, but a little cleaner.) Even in the blues, i'm not attracted to sloppy.

7. That's a tough choice. Hound Dog Taylor has so few
Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 04:23 PM by GumboYaYa
CDs to judge. I have two and both are raw blues played with all the feeling required and more for blues to be blues. I suspect that Hound Dog Taylor would be out of this world live, but I never had the chance to see him play live.

Otis Rush is a modern blues great. I've seen him play a few times. You never leave an Otis Rush show disappointed.

I guess, if you make me have to choose, it would be Hound Dog Taylor, but that is one helluva hard choice to make (I picked Hound Dog solely because I think he "feels" the blues more).

11. Jammed with Hound Dog
He and the band were at this club in Des Moines about 1973. I was going to school there. He and the band came to a house party after the gig and set up again and started playing. I had a few harps in my car and after some coaxing by my brother and a bunch of beers I brought them in and jammed with them for about an hour. Was great! He was a wonderful guy. Not bad for a young white boy he kept saying to me.

You must be good, Badger1!

When I sat in with Johnny Young and Big Walter Horton as a teenager Johnny said to me:"For a whiteboy you feel the blues real good."

BTW, are you in Des Moines {I have kin there}?

17. Seen Otis many times
and he is a great guitar player and not a bad singer. Never had a chance to see Mr. Taylor, but he seemed to have an awful lot of fun. If anyone is in Chicago, or has occasion to attend certain Blues Fests this summer, you may run into Bruce Iglauer. Ask him about Hound Dog Taylor.
