What the hell did I do wrong??? It seems counterproductive to have to turn it off in order to go online, and my AIM has totally disappeared :(

1. hmm
Do you have the lock on? That's the only thing I can think of that just blocks the internet completely, unless you told it not to allow AOL or IE to access the internet.

4. That happened to me at first, too
What happened in my case was that it asked me if I wanted to allow Generic Host Process 32 to access the internet. Since I had already allowed Internet Explorer to access, & I freaked out when I saw the number "32" (because I thought it had something to do with the blaster worm), I said no. That prevented me from being able to get on the web. It's probably something as simple as that.

5. Zone Alarm requires that you give each program permission
To access the internet. You can just tell it to always allow a given program to access the net, or you can have it ask you each time. And as someone else said, you can ratchet it up to maximum security and it will totally lock out the internet.

Does that help any? Did you tell it to let your browser access the internet?

6. I don't know WHAT I told it to do..
Should I uninstall it and do it over?? I need something that KNOWS what to do ON ITS OWN.. I am totally dumb at this stuff. I probably told it to block everything ,but how do I undo what I apparently did??

8. You could try that
Paranoid Pat gave you a very good explanation in the first thread. It sounds like it pretty much operates like my firewall. If not you might just do better to get your computer updated at windows update. http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Also use an updated antivirus program.

9. Perhaps I can help....a little.
Go to the system tray and click on the ZA icon. You should have 2 tabs, one called "main" and 1 called "Programs". Under "Main", make sure the button for Internet lock is "off". Set the program control to medium. Next go to Programs and run down the list. The program matrix has each application with 4 sets of "?". You should be OK to click on each "?" and reset to "allow" under the Access columns. Those that you are sure about, you can allow to act as a "server"....this is where the program can access the net and deliver info into your computer. If you aren't sure, keep as a "?" and you will be asked to approve everytime the application tries to access the net.

Hope that helps!

11. SoCal.....
....check the Will Pitt thread! Can someone recommend a good firewall?

Right click on the Zone Alarm icon in your system tray and choose 'Restore Zone Alarm Control Panel'.
On the left side of the screen, click on 'Program Control'.
You should now see a screen that lists what permissions you have set.
Next to each program name there are columns with either a green check mark,(OK to access) a blue question mark, (Ask each time) or a red 'X',(Never allow access!).
Just left click on the symbols to change them or right click on all the programs and choose 'remove' to start over.
Don't worry, the remove option only removes the program from your firewall permissions, not from your computer! :)
When you're done, simply right click on the blue bar at the top of the Zone Alarm Control Panel and choose 'Send to tray' or hit Alt+F4.

If you have any other problems let us know! :hi:

7. click on the ZoneAlarm icon in your system tray (lower right)
then click on Program Control
do you have "Medium Control" selected?
it says "Choose Medium program for the first few days you use ZoneAlarm. This lets ZoneAlarm learn and secure your programs. Choose High program control after you have used your browser, e-mail, chat and other Internet programs at least once. Option: enable the Automatic Lock if you leave your computer online and unattended for long periods."
