5. There's some kind of shrub

:evilgrin: no, a different shrub/hedge bush- red tip, some kind of laurel?- that blooms in late spring- has these clumps of small white blossoms which smell very much like carrion with a sweet undertone. Makes me literally gag.

ON EDIT: WAB/SBP, you know the ones I'm talking about- they're all over the Triangle, esp. Raleigh. Haven't seen (smelled) nearly as many since we moved to Asheboro.

I'm stumped. :shrug:

There are lots of foul smells to be had in the Triangle. The dairy farmers around here, for instance, grow their own corn for feed, and they fertilize with these things that look like gigantic lawn sprinklers that shoot out a hundred-plus foot stream of sewage treatment plant waste or farm lagoon effluent through the air. The stink is mighty.

There's junction of some sort (not a plant but some sort of filtration sight) out back. Whenever I'm in my yard on a hot day, it stinks to high heaven. Whenever I complain to the County, they say they'll fix it but they never do. Basically I breathe through my mouth and hope for rain all summer. And my yard is unkept anyway so it's not that big of a deal that I'm never there.

I built a bridge on US-441 just north of Douglas, Georgia in the summer of 1976 (or so). It was right across the highway from the Douglas Abatoir. It was enough to put a buzzard off his feed!

When I was in college we went on a field trip to the local sewage plant and I foolishly stuck my head over the top of a vat to see what was inside inside...and it was full of dead rats! Instantly lost my lunch.

26. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the smell of

pus from an infected wound. Pus gives fresh diarrhea splattered over the side of a toilet stall a run for it's money. I've dealt with both, wearing a surgical mask stuffed with sliced lemon wedges crammed between your nose and the mask really helps!

I once had a - and I'm not exagerating here - a nine-foot long snake crawl through a crack in the floor and die under my bathtub. I finally figured out the problem after weeks of living with the smell. When I pulled the snake out it was rotting to the point of liquifaction. As I pulled it from the hole in the floor while standing on the basement floor, it dripped rotting snake and maggots all over me. Suck on that 'un!

As a medical student, doing forensic pathology sounded cool. I used to love Quincy! Then we got the case of the couple that was murdered and stuffed in a sewage tank. And discovered several weeks later. And we had to do the autopsies. It was beyond belief. You wanted to pass out just standing in the hallway. Remember the face masks with the minty goo they wore in "Silence of the Lambs"? That stuff didn't begin to make a dent in this stench.

So, I am going with "rotting flesh".
