On the local Los Angeles news an abandoned oil well spewed 300 gallons of oil onto a neighborhood. They don't know who owns the well. Say what? Isn't this a little bit like losing a gold mine?

1. Well, now that it's a problem it's an orphan. |

No one wants to 'fess up and then have to pay for the clean up.

Clean-up would cost a fraction of what they'd get from a spewing oil well! Hell, I'll claim it and pay for the clean-up!

3. There's Probably A Reason It Was Abandoned |
|
Don't let the "spewing oil well" image fool you; the well was probably abandoned by its operator because it was no longer an economical proposition. Well clean-ups are expensive. Still, the state oil and gas regulatory authorities ought to be able to determine who's responsible for the well and get things squared away......
