I think it may be possible.
Target actually found a worse band than The Darkness to play on their TVs on display.

3. I'm still trying to figure out... |
|
...whether the Darkness are a tongue-in-cheek parody of some unfortunate blend of seventies art-rock/eighties cock-rock or whether they're simply and earnestly playing that style of music because they like it.
I think I'd actually give them more credit if they're the latter. It's hard to take it seriously, but it's also hard to imagine them building a career around the former scenario. Any thoughts? Or am I already putting more thought into this question than it deserves or ever will deserve?!

they are perpetuating a terrible time in music that everyone would be better off leaving in the past. Eighties metal...:puke:

some things need to be left dead, and the style The Darkness is playing is one of them.

They're fun, and they actually play their instruments.
Something very rare in todays music...

9. Actually not all that rare anymore |

Was for a while when Britney, Christina, and 'N Sync seemed to rule everything.

5. I don't keep up with new music as much as I used to... |
|
...(sad, considering I'm only 20) but I'd still give that "honor" to either New Found Glory or Good Charlotte. But I haven't heard Story of the Year so I may have to check them out to see if they are more deserving.

Will check them out, though, just because I'm so music-curious. I actually don't mind Good Charlotte anymore.

11. The Darkness is tongue in cheek...Story of the Year is not... |
|
That is the difference.
All of these third rate emo pop bands that they are foisting on the public now that Nu Metal and Rap Rock are dead, are positively horrendous.

13. Tongue-in-cheek is, if anything, worse than being 'for real' |
|
The Darkness are a troupe of pretentious upper-class drama students pretending to be Def Leppard. If anything, it's a little condescending to people who actually like metal.

14. I love metal with an unparalleled passion... |

And I have no problem with them. That stuff has always been somewhat tongue in cheek anyway. I never really took stuff like Def Leppard or Queen or Poison "seriously" even though I loved their music.
There's room for it all and I'm just glad after all this ridiculous faux seriousness and angst in popular music that there is a band that is just having fun and taking the piss out.
I don't even own the Darkness album, nor do I plan on buying it. But I feel the same way about them as I did the ska revival bands. Is it my personal bag? No way. But I'd much rather turn on a tv or radio and see and hear bands having fun rather than lamenting about how awful their megaplatinum, uber-popular lives are.
I'm mostly just playing devil's advocate here.
