Need an answer urgently....
Today in the mail I got a "Vote By Mail" application. The front cover of it says, "Urgent: Vote by mail application. Avoid the election day lines. Send in this absentee ballot request today!"

Inside it says:
Again this year, voters can expect long lines, a long ballot and a lot of election day frustration. Avoid the hassle by voting early by absentee ballot.

It's easy, fast and convenient.

1) Complete, sign and mail your request. Questions? Call your municipal clerk.

2) When your ballot arrives mark you vote for Scott Walker and mail it back right away.

Please tell me this is NOT legal?!?!?! How can he suggest voting by absentee if you're not going to be gone? Who would I contact about this? Scott Walker is a Republican who wanted to cut park budgets, etc.

1. Of course it's legal.
As long as your state's election law allows for absentee voting for any reason, he can suggest anything he likes.

Check your state's election law.

2. I don't know the answer to this, but...
Have you posted this at GD or GD2004?

There might be some people at either forum who could answer your question.

Just a suggestion.

3. My mom got something similar!
Only it was before primary day here in TX. Her "request" was PREMAKRED for the Republican Primary Ballot. Mom is a Democrat!

I'd call the state agency that runs your elections. Or, your state's ethics commission.

I guess this is all the rage in Republican fundraising this year. Sort of like those letters that look like they are from the government, with some quasi-governmental-sounding name, that are really sales pitches. Same crap.

5. You can vote absentee for any reason in WI
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 12:04 PM by eyesroll
BUT: Since it says call your clerk, do so. Call the elections board. This may be legal, but it's not ethical.
(On edit: It's specifically unethical to imply that to avoid long lines, one should vote for Scott Walker, which is how this reads.)

Also, you may want to contact the Wisconsin Democratic Party -- www.wisdems.org. 608-255-5172. Or the Milwaukee County Democratic Party -- the chair is Martha Love, 414-344-8423. (These #s are listed on the DPW Web site, so I'm not giving out private info.)

Call the Riemer campaign as well -- http://www.davidriemer.com/, 414-221-9988. . They might be able to make some hay about it.
