I've Been Watching "American Idol"

They have one contestant who looks like George W' Bush's illegitimate, mentally-challenged son. And he can't sing, either.

Anyone else notice the resemblance?

3. You can be talking about Jon Peter Lewis.

He's so naturally hobbit like that I can't help but like him.

And I think his voice is okay when he really tries. His biggest problem is the fact that he cannot sing AND dance (or try to dance I should say) at the same time.

On edit: Of course there is John Stevens who is a red head who tries to pretend he is Dean Martin (or Teen Martin as we call him). I think he sucks to high heaven.

6. That's The One!!!!

He's almost as bad as the contestant last time who was in the military. I think that's the only reason people voted for him - to "show support for the troops".

They have some rather talented contestants this time - especially LaToya, Fantasia, George, and Jennifer. I still can't understand how Jennifer got in the bottom three last night - I though she sang circles around a lot of the others.

John Stevens just doesn't beling in this competition. He's more of a lounge act than an idol.

15. I don't like Jennifer

IMO, you can find 5000 Jennifers in Baptist churches all across America singing in the Sunday choir. She has that "churchy" sound to all of her singing that makes me think that all of her songs should be followed up by a Ryan Seacrest sermon on the dangers of idolatry. Her voice is strong, smooth, and steady, but I find her uninspired and uninspiring.

As to John Stevens, I don't know what to think. He has an amazingly impressive voice for a 16 year old kid, but I've never heard him sing outside of that "Frank Sinatra wannabe" genre (which his voice naturally lends itself to) so I can't quite figure out whether he really has the range needed to be a great singer. I guess we'll find out in the next few weeks.

16. Since Aretha Franklin Started Singing in Churches....

...I see nothing wrong with that.

17. She's no Aretha

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with singing in churches. You'd be suprised at how many popular singers started their careers in a church or huddled around a piano with their family.

But Aretha is inspiring and distinct! If I close my eyes and a song from someone like Aretha comes on the radio, I can recognize the artist from the voice even before I recognize the song. Jennifer doesn't have that. She's good, but there is nothing about her singing to make her unique or make her voice recognizable. I can hear people sing just as well every Sunday at 10AM just up the street from my house. Are they good singers? Yes. Are they idols? No.

If the competition weren't so fierce (they have some AMAZING singers this season), I'd give her half a shot. As it is, I think we'll see her exit during the next two or three episodes.
