CONFESS!!!!!! What clothing fad did you own?
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 04:27 PM by LynneSin
Was it a Members Only jacket? Or maybe parachute pants. How about 70's polyester shirts? Maybe you have that article of clothing still hidden in the back of your closet.

Me - I loved those baggie pants aka MC Hammer style. I had 3 pairs of them and I loved wearing em. Hideous stuff if you ask me.

EDIT NOTE: Typo for the really obscene item listed

54. I must have missed that name
I just looked it up -- we called those muscleman pants because that's who wore them all the time. Someone brought me a Batik pair from Thailand that was very comfy.

And Oh yeah, baby I had a members only jacket.

And Earth shoes.

19. Hell, I had a whole Nehru suit...
Of course, given that I was about 8 years old, I had little choice in the matter.

Somewhere out there, probably sticking to the bottom of a stack of old newspapers, is a picture of me wearing it. One day I will find it, destroy it, and the whole ugly episode will finally be closed for good.

Now, the skinny red leather tie in the 80's? That was my own fault...

Flash in the pan from the same era. I wanted one badly.

Does anyone remember those Flagg Bros. Snap Jack shoes for guys? Girls wore T-straps. I had black penny loafers with taps (to keep the heels from wearing down – yeah, sure) and dimes in them.

I know a guy who had a baby blue Zoot Suit.

43. Well
There were the Earth Shoes--the original ones from the late 60s and 70s. They were the kind where the heel was lower than the front. Supposedly they were "good for your back."

Then there were the hiphuggers, of which I had about two pair. Then there were the bellbottoms, of which almost all my pants qualified, and then there were those two-toned saddle shoes, and those really thin little "ballet shoes" that came in the mid 80s that really did a number on your feet.

I owned a couple of polyester pantsuits as well. I never owned platform shoes, though; I fell on my ankles without any kind of a heel, so I would likely have killed myself on platform shoes.

47. I'm embarrassed to say, I had some for every decade:
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 06:50 PM by notmyprez
In the '60s, from age 10 through junior high:
nehru jacket
micro-miniskirts
go go boots
white lipstick, nail polish, and eye shadow
hip hugger bell bottoms (esp. jeans)
granny glasses
peace symbol around neck
"Work for Peace" button with dove

Moving into the '70s, high school and college:
love beads
platform shoes
work shirts
army shirt
danskin leotards and skirts
more bell bottoms (esp. jeans)
hot pants
tube tops
halter tops

The '80s (and the beginning of the '90s) , my "rock scene" days:
everything black
leather miniskirt
black leather jackets
studded black leather jacket
Harley Davidson black leather jacket
tight jeans
bustiers
spandex (pants and skirt, black of course)
leopard print
big hair

The late '90s:
didn't bother any more :-)

62. Member's Only and Izod (collars up)
I wore pastel colored Izod shirts (with the collar pulled up) over a black Members Only jacket with acid-washed, boot-cut Wranglers and canvas Nikes. (Hiar parted down the middle and feathered on both sides, too...hehe)

'84 was a pretty good year to graduate :)

63. I had a white Don Johnson jacket. (Miami Vice)
My mom bought it for me when I was in college. To my credit, I never wore the hot pink t-shirt that she also bought.

I also had a Van Halen baseball jersey that I was quite fond of.

65. Earth shoes
The heel was lower than the tarsal/metatarsal bed. You walked with your calf muscles stretched at all times. It hurt. but this was, supposedly, the way we walked in the dirt, before we had shoes. What a moron I was.

I had a pair of yellow ones, but when I wore them I looked like a complete dork. I kept tripping over my own feet!

Women with large feet, beware the CT trend!

75. Yes, Rabrrrrrr wore parachute pants in high school and college
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 10:58 PM by Rabrrrrrr
though he only ever owned one pair, and when they died, they died. Rabrrrrrr also owned a few pair of jams, which are still being worn by his mate (I had some cool ones with an Egyptian motif, which I bought because I was really into Akhnaten for a while). Other than that, though, Rabrrrrrr has never ridden a clothing fad, and has no desire ever to do so again.

Thank God.

Oh, I also had a couple of Johnson Wax t-shirts, but those weren't really faddy so much as hilarious.

Rabrrrrrr has absolutely never worn his collar turned up, nor worn an alligator shirt, nor deck shoes, nor has he ever, ever, ever worn a sweater with the arms tied around his neck like some inbred upscale ignorant yuppie filth with delusions of competency as a human being.

I've never worn Old Navy, Members Only, GAP, or Banana Republic crap either.

I cried when they broke

elephant bell bottoms, the ones that dragged on the ground ( they were wonderful, they got wet when it rained)

buffalo sandals from India

then the punk years: Army pants, white shirt and men's black jacket ala Patti Smith on the cover of Horses

lots of men's jackets from the thrift store

tai chi shoes

real leather pants

spandex (Joan Jett homage)

82. I had a few cheesy items in the 80s
Acid washed jeans, day-glo flourescent shirts and socks, fingerless gloves.

And...this is really embarrassing...in 6th grade, I had a Michael Jackson "glove" earring. Yes, just one.

I had one back in 1983 when I was just starting college. My mother-in-law bought me one for my birthday in 1992 or something like that. I never wear it. It isn't bad looking but it is kind of passe. I know at my age I shouldn't be so concerned about what other people will think of me.

You had to know how to fight to wear it!
Paisley, polka-dots, Beatle Boots, bell-bottoms with flares, op-art, pinstripes, pea coats, CPO jackets, beads, umbrellas and TIES!

90. Twist-a-bead necklaces in tons of colors,
Jelly shoes in several colors, bright miniskirts with big shirts and hip belts (remember those, ladies?).

I was REALLY mod (chortle). When I cut off my long hair for a frosted short 'do, I left a little tail (like Aimee Mann from til Tuesday). I left the rest of my hair brown, but died the tail blonde and braided it.

I wore it with big black Goodwill jackets, black miniskirt, British flag button on my lapel, and fake Docs (couldn't afford the real ones) or black Reebok hightops.

It went with the white lipstick and nail polish. And of course the eyeliner and mascara. That was the "look" when I was in junior high. LOL And the Yardley cologne because everything British was so cool in the days of the British Invasion.

Am I the only person at DU who remembers that?

I also wore bell bottoms and culottes, though not at the same time. :-)

On edit: I also had one of those caps (sort of a newsboy style) that was part of the Mod look. It was purple and had been sewn by one of my friends in middle school/high school (Yes, really).
