Tammy Faye [Bakker] Messner has inoperable lung cancer

watching her on Larry King.

I just saw The eyes of Tammy Faye recently, and she's actually a very interesting person. This is sad.

1. You know,
I rented "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" just a couple of weeks ago. I came away with a new respect for her. She is an interesting lady. I am watching her on Larry King too. This is very sad.

2. Yeah, I'm watching that.
Her comments on her relationship with Ron Jeremy almost made me misty-eyed. I can't help it. I like her. Despite my disagreements with most of the things she stands for, she's "good people".

That said, can someone explain to me why she's become such a "gay icon"? Is it the makeup?

3. she's so over-the-top
and that's always attractive to a lot of gay men.

But she also has NEVER said anything bad about gays. She's one of the few evangelicals who has always been supportive of gays.

12. Tammy knows she is so over the top
she laughs at herself. Who could not like that? I like how non-judgemental she is (which is SO refreshing) and is full of empathy for people.

16. Excuse me, but she did say something bad! I believe it was on Larry King
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 11:16 PM by PartyPooper
a year or so ago.

LK: (paraphrased) "Do you believe gays are the way they are because of nature-or, by choice?"

TFB: "Oh, I don't know if it's by choice or not...I just don't know!"

And, I heard her say those words! Gimmee a friggin' break!

:wtf:

17. I'd hardly call that bad
She said she didn't know. That's a helluva lot better than all the other evangelicals who INSIST it's a choice.

21. Well, if you're a genuine "gay icon" like Judy Garland or Bette Midler
you *know* being gay isn't a choice!

:hi:

(BTW, I know Judy would love that waving emoticon!)

15. Ron Jeremy?
I saw them on that show they did together--Tammy Faye, Ron Jeremy, Erik Estrada, Vanilla Ice, Gary Coleman, and some others all living in the same house together? What was it called? Surreal World? I only saw one episode.

6. tammy faye
Im sorry but she has bilked so many people out of so much money.. she took horrid advantage of stupid gullible people. Yeah, she cries great crocodile tears.

She is lucky that she has time to say goodbye and mend fences before she goes. Many arent that lucky.

23. She's not evil, but Falwell is.
Tammy Faye may have lived off of televangelism and fraud, but she no longer has the power to hurt anyone and has made an effort to make amends.

The Bakers were greedy, but Fallwell is damned evil. He has taken their fraud to a political level.

you're right. I used to laugh AT her. Now I like her. She's really not what we thought she was. Her ex husband was a real creep, though.

10. I still laugh at her, but somehow I don't think she minds. It's impossible

not to like her, although I doubt that she and I would ever agree on anything, I like the way she always looks for, and finds something she can admire in people. She is just who she is, and completely unapologetic or pretentious about it.

11. My husband
actually did some work for them (PTL), they needed help with some of their broadcasting/communications systems. It's easy to ridicule someone like Tammy Faye, but my husband has reinforced what some other DUers have said, that she's kind. Televangelism is rather unsavory, but it's been my understanding that much of the fraud was perpetrated by PTL's accountant(s), b/c Jim Bakker was (is) thick as a plank.

20. I met him.
Actually, I met his daughter and then met him (briefly). I was a kid, and I immediately knew he was as dumb as a rock. I don't mean that in an unkind way -- he's not a fucking idiot like our pResident -- he's just not an intelligent person by any stretch of the imagination. I honestly think he didn't know what the people pulling his strings were up to.

Think about it -- how many times have you signed something without reading the fine print? I have, too many times to count. :scared:

That's a shame. I know someone dying of cancer right now, one of the sweetest ladies I've ever met.

Hang in there Tammy.

I also thought she was awful until I rented the Eyes of Tammie Fae last year. That was a well done documentary.

And didn't she have colon cancer a few years ago? :-(

I hope she can beat this, poor thing. Cancer is not something I'd wish on my worst enemy.

26. Wow.....I really do feel bad for her
Poor Tammy Faye. My own Mother just died from this cancer in January after being diagnosed in November. Just that quick. I sincerely hope she has better luck than my Mom.
You guys are right, she is impossible not to like. Regardless of all the sordidness with PTL, there is something absolutely genuine and decent about her. I wish her well.
