Poll question: Favorite Santana number
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 02:19 AM by undisclosedlocation
Tricky! Finally an oldies act with actual hits from the last five years! Kinda stinks, 'cause us moldy oldies aren't going to recognize anything after "Smooth" (ok, I'm just speaking for myself), but I had to take off great stuff from decades past 'cause this new stuff constitutes his/their biggest hits ever. Oh well.

Apologies to those who gave me such great suggestions on the earlier nominations thread. It turned out that Santana had so many hits that such a thread was hardly necessary.

Also, I appreciate that I'll be castigated for leaving off Black Magic Woman, but having already left off NSMA's excellent nominee She's Not There, I figured I'd try to avoid covers. (NightTrain, I left off Hold On on the grounds you cited: hardly anybody remembers it, not even me.)

Edit for clarity (hopefully)

5. Where the #$%@ is Black Magic Woman?
Yeah I know Fleetwood Mac wrote it, but who the Hell ever actually heard their version of it?

18. I have! I have! I've heard the Fleetwood Mac version.
The early version(s) of Fleetwood Mac would be my favorite! :-)

6. Other ~
Good Lord, you left off Samba Pa Ti and Europa?????

What is wrong with you? Santana is always best when his guitar is allowed to tell the story.

No offense, of course, but that just seems all kinds of wrong...

8. Put me down for Europa
Every time I play that song, the melody sticks in my head for days. It is so smooth and lyrical at the beginning, but turns into a kick-ass solo at the end.

14. Mea culpa, mea culpa
On the other hand, as you have a star too, you can always let this one drop off the charts and start your own Santana poll. I'm not the biggest fan in the world; just heard "Everybody's Everything" (which I still can't believe doesn't have a vote) yesterday and thought it would make a fun poll.

9. There is TONS left out of this poll
Most notably perhaps Black Magic Woman, which was certainly IMHO the best of his old stuff, at least the old stuff anyone has heard of anyway. In particular there is a video of a concert Santana did in South America, I forget where, in which they play this song in a driving thunderstorm. Good stuff.

But from his new stuff, the stuff he made with current artists, AGAIN you leave off the best of the lot, Europa.

You blew it on this poll but you do get a few bonus points for including the Woodstock live version of Soul Sacrifice.

Nah just kidding ya. Any poll including Santana is ok by me :)

11. The Woodstock Soul Sacrifice
is absolutely the best of the oldies (I LOVE live music). From the recent era, my absolute favorite is from Supernatural-- it's a hit called "Put Your Lights On".

Even better than Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On for creating a certain ... mood.

21. Full Moon
from the album, "Spirits Dancing In the Flesh". It's a bit cheesy but the dynamic, the change of the guitar tone is expertly done.

However, I'd have voted for "Black Magic Woman" had it been a choice.

23. Black Magic Woman
I got a Black Magic Woman
I got a Black Magic Woman
I got a Black Magic Woman
She's got me so blind I can't see
She's a Black Magic Woman
She's trying to make a devil out of me

Don't turn your back on me, baby
Don't turn your back on me, baby
Yes, don't turn your back on me, baby
Don't mess around with your tricks
Don't turn your back on me, baby
Cause you might just
Wake up my magic sticks

You got your spell on me, baby
You got your spell on me, baby
Yes, you got your spell on me, baby
Turnin' my heart into stone
I need you so bad
Black Magic Woman
I can't leave you alone

24. Second for Samba Pa Ti
Nothing like that for mood.

But I'll make a second for Evil Ways because Carlos played that recently at a concert and dedicated to bu$h, said be better stop his evil ways.
