I'm too attached (a rant)
When I was a kid I vowed I would never get attached to the things I could lose. I would only store memories, not property; I'd be like the Cat Who Walked By Herself and all places would be alike to me; and most of all, I'd never make a person so much "mine" that I'd be upset to lose them. "Home is where the suitcase is" would be my motto.

Now I'm too attached.

I can't be happy living anywhere but Seattle; I proved that last year. I am constantly sad because I miss my "old life" and my kids. I am afraid I'll lose what little I have in my "new life"--my roomies and my boyfriend. I no longer feel like I can just pick up and go at a moment's notice. I have too many things I'd care if I lost.

Nine-year-old me would kick my ass for this.

1. So much for childhood ambitions
Hey, when I was nine, I wanted to be an arms dealer. Yeah, for real. I read Newsweek magazine every week and it appeared to me this was a business where, when you needed an order, all that was necessary to do was hatch up a new scare campaign. Had nothing to do with the laws of supply and demand. I figured I would be worth about $990 million in no time at all.

Unfortunately ($$), things did not work out for me as an arms dealer and I am now a university professor and organic gardener who sits around posting on DU in the middle of the night.

2. My other big ambition was to join the ALF
But mostly, I just wanted to be "safe."

4. You mentioned kids
Where are your kids, if you don't mind me asking? They live with their father?

5. Yeah, half a continent away
When their dad left me, I was extremely ill from radiation and chemo, and he got custody by default. Plus, he owns a house now, and my living situation's tenuous....

7. It happens
Having a depressive mom couldn't have been too good for them anyway; I'm sure they're better off with him and his very functional girlfriend.
