Poll question: What's the plural of "platypus"?
It is a question of cosmic relevance.

10. I think that you are correct on this, but on edit, I am wrong...

Acording to Merriam Websters, the correct form for the plural of Platypus is Platypuses, ot platypi.

11. It's Greek to me
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 11:52 AM by aneerkoinos
And in Greek, 'poda' is the plural of 'pous' (foot). So you are right, and if some dictionary has other opinion, you are still right. :)

On edit: and the really really right answer is 'platypodes';
'platypoda' would be plural in neuter gender and we don't want to use that of animals - or singular accusative case.

13. That's gotta be right
I'm not going to argue Greek linguistics with anyone with a name like aneerkoinos.

By the way, does that mean "common dream"?

I don't really speak Greek, but in my last life I was Skatokefeles of Ülm.

"Platypi" brings an image of a bunch of platypuses studying trigonometry.

16. we speak ENGLISH not LATIN
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 06:36 PM by confusionisnext
If you insist on "platypi" then why not fully decline it?

I have a carload of platyporum.
Last night we ate a few platypos for dinner.
I gave my platypo some fish.

See how silly it can get when we insist on Latin endings?
