Anyone have comedy movie recommendations...
Could use some cheering up.

Would love some recommendations of mindless fun movies -- nothing too subtle. Nothing requiring subtitles either, please.

Maybe a LITTLE off the beaten track... I have things like Young Frankenstein, Blues Brothers, Caddyshack, Dumb & Dumber, Monty Python, etc. but could stand to expand a bit from those.

Anyway, thanks in advance...

1. "Election" is always good, especially for the politically minded
If you don't mind British and Irish ACCENTS (subtitles probably not necessary), try Hot Fuzz (London cop is transferred to a picturesque village with an unusually high death rate and Waking Ned Devine, in which a man dies of shock upon winning the lottery, so his neighbors have to pretend that he's not dead so they can claim the money.

17. Anything Simon Pegg.
I thought Hot Fuzz was one of the funniest movies to come out in years (saw it by chance on an airplane and watched it twice back to back). Shaun of the Dead and Run Fatboy Run are great too.

My favorite slightly off the beaten track comedy is called "The Castle". It's about an Australian family that lives next to an airport and has to fight the man when their house is seized under eminent domain laws.

Big Lebowski is top-tier comedy.
"Oh Brother , Where Art Thou " is pretty good.
"Knocked Up" is very funny but I think Seth Rogen is not for everyone ?

4. It's not fiction, but with your interests
Eddie Izzard's "Dress to Kill" would probably slay you.

It's one of my go-to discs when I want something to watch to cheer me up.

despite all the fine suggestions, I'm attempting "Fletch Lives" -- but the disc has been "resurfaced" evidently to the point it barely plays. :/

if you're watching for the plot, it's a mess, but there are plenty of great characters and jokes if you watch with an open mind.

Gary Busey is completely out of his mind for this one... in a good way.

21. Any of Peter Sellers' Inspector Clouseau (Pink Panther) movies,
though I think "The Pink Panther Strikes Again" is the funniest. The opening scene at the asylum is classic.

Just last week I rented "The Proposal" with Sandra Bullock - sometimes she really irritates me, but parts of this were quite funny. Perhaps because Betty White is in it. I love Betty White.

32. Any of the Ben Stiller movies...

"Night in the Museum" is very good. Haven't seen sequel, however. I also second the suggestion of "Tropic Thunder" and would add "Meet the Parents" and "Meet the Fockers" to the list. If you enjoy "so stupid it's funny", I recommend "Zoolander" and "Dodgeball."

"Airplane" is always good for laughs, no matter how many times one has seen it. Heck, just about anything with Leslie Nielsen is great for a laugh, especially the "Naked Gun" series of films.

And, while it's not necessarily a comedy, I highly recommend "The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension." It has several funny moments in it, some due to John Lithgow's character. You'll notice lots of other familiar faces in it, all in the early stages of their careers.

Or, you could rent old episodes of "Arrested Development" (or watch on Hulu.com).

Ruthless People

Barbara: So, when do I get out of here?
Sandy: As soon as Mr. Stone pays the ransom.
Barbara: What's the problem? What is the ransom?
Sandy: Well, we asked for $500,000.
Barbara: That should be no problem.
Sandy: He wouldn't pay.
Barbara: He wouldn't pay?
Sandy: Then we asked him for $50,000.
Barbara: Yeah?
Sandy: He still wouldn't pay. So now we're lowering our price to $10,000.
Barbara: Do I understand this correctly? I'm being marked down?
{Starts crying}
Barbara: I've been kidnapped by K-Mart!

If you haven't seen it, please do! I've watched it over and over for many years, and I never get tired of it. It's from 1996, but that doesn't matter. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are amazing in this movie. There's one scene at a restaurant that rivals any single piece of acting that you'll ever see.

I also love Dianne Wiest in this movie.

The whole thing is brilliant, and even if you have seen it before, try it again.
