1. And nobody can sing like Tiny Tim.
This kind of statement doesn't really indicate whether it is a good or a bad thing.

8. Like Elvis, respect and common courtesy on DU have left the building
I don;t have time for it. I stay in close quarters with my posse and leave a photo of my ass behind so that the people who come after a piece of me know what to KISS.

Don't let it get ya down.

15. Well, I thought it was funny.
B-)

BTW: Chet Atkins was Guitar George ("...he knows all the chords..."). In my travels I've noticed that he's known mostly by country fans, rockabilly fans, old school rock & roll fans, and guitar players. Just to give you a frame of reference, he's kind of a more countrified, harder rocking Les Paul. And a whole lot of people don't know who he is, even though people who DO know who he is may huff and puff and wail and rend over "how can you NOT know who Chet Atkins is!?!?!!" So don't feel bad. Now, if you don't know who Les Paul is, I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll....

19. You sure about that "Guitar George" thing?
For one, George was "strictly rhythm, he doesn't want to make it cry or sing" -- I think that song was basically describing a struggling bar band who played jazz and creole and doing their own thing.

Chet and Knopfler worked together later, but I don't think that's a reference to Chet.

21. Oh no. I just meant that...
...I, myself, refer to him as Guitar George...because he knows all the chords. A country player with jazz guitarist skills.

6. I do too
My grandfather who passed last year had a Gibson dove and he could make it sing like that when he was younger.

People don't play like that any longer

7. You are PREACHING to the CHOIR, homeboy...
I grew up in a home FILLED with the sounds of Chet Atkins.

When he died, my mom WEPT.

Chet was the Alpha and Omega of guitar. He was a genius, a country gentleman, and he is missed.

14. I agree
Chet was the shit. If anybody could ever come close it would be Tommy Crook from here in Tulsa. I remember Chet telling Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show that Tommy was the best guitar player he ever heard.

And the fact that you can just walk into Lana Thai restaraunt, sit down and order some good Thai food and listen to him play is really cool. That's where that youtube video was shot.

18. Here's a cool clip with Jerry Reed
Shows Chet had a pretty good (and dry) sense of humor... "I'll play the first part because I want it done right"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLqyNV1SMWE

This is also very cool because there's no way any TV show today would let two musicians just improvise and figure out on camera what they were going to play and just have some damn FUN. There was a chunk of Elvis' 68 Comeback special that's like that, with him and his band just messing around, and it's probably the most entertaining part of the whole program.

22. A brilliant player, but a terrible influence on Nashville production
When people deplore the slickness of much of today's country music, I either remind or educate them that Atkins was a pioneer in slicking up the sound.

27. Chet Atkins was a classy guy all the way
He got his start playing guitar with the Carter Family, he always attributed his career to Mother Maybell Carter. Rose from a simple picker to the Big boss at RCA records in Nashville and nurtured hundreds of musicians. He played on thousands of recordings.

He was even very nice to a 19 year old guitarist who delivered his room service meals at the old Leamington Hotel in Oakland when he stayed there back in the '70's. Showed the kid a couple of licks and made sure he had a couple of tickets to his show at the Paramount Theater the two times he stayed at the hotel.

28. Used to be a wonderful video of Chet Atkins and Larry Carlton on Youtube.
"Austin city limits" took it down (it was theirs)

I wrote to them to buy a copy of the tape...they wrote back and said the tape was destroyed.

ASSHOLES!!! They threw the tape away rather than let the public enjoy it...
