A Question for Jazz Lovers

I have a theory about people who consider Jazz their favorite form of music. My theory is that most Jazz lovers currently play an instrument and/or studied/played an a instrument for an extended period of time in their lives, say more than two years.

Is my theory out of bounds?

1. Well, jazz is not my "favorite", but I like it, draw from it, have listened to it

for 45 years are so. I do play several instruments, and have been a paid professional musician for about 15 years in the past.

I'd say a lot of jazz listeners play instruments to one degree or another.

But that probably applies to any improvisation-intensive activity.

I know I got into jazz because I played trumpet in our high school stage band. Never got the hang of improvisation, though.

This machine was made as a collaborative effort between Robert M. Trammell Music Conservatory and Sharon Wick School Engineering at the University of Iowa. 97% of the machines components came from John Deere Industries and Irrigation Equipment of Bancroft Iowa. It took the team a combined 13,029 hours of set-up, alignment, calibration, and tuning before filming this video. Now on display in the Matthew Gerhard Alumni Hall at the University, it is already slated to be donated to the Smithsonian.

100% computer generated.

The device depicted in this video does not exist, at the University of Iowa or anywhere else. It's an example of a computer-animated music video, this one entitled "Pipe Dream" and taken from one of several similar segments on a DVD produced by Animusic.

Smithsonian has debunked it, too:

The web site you referred us to shows a computer enhanced or animated creation as indicated by the caption "Musique Animation" and not an actual musical instrument. Further, we were unable to find any reference to a Robert M. Trammel Music Conservatory and the University of Iowa does not have a Sharon Wick School of Engineering nor a Matthew Gerhard Alumni Hall.

The Institution cannot accept a donation of something that doesn't exist.

15. yep, makes sense

Once I was able to see it on a full size pc screen I figured out it was animated. It looked real on my iphone screen and it was really freaking me out!

8. I Love Dixieland Jazz

But I couldn't play a paper w/ comb or bang a pot with a wooden spoon if I tried! To me Dixieland is more of a fun music rather then a study of sounds and techniques. It's foot tappin quality.

Then again, I know more than a few jazz lovers who are not musicians at all. But as a genre, jazz - especially post-Miles Davis or Ornette Coleman - is a type of music that expects the listener to understand a little of what's going on to appreciate it. One of the best descriptions I've heard for a successful improvisation is that you should find the balance between surprising the audience and meeting their expectations. If you constantly surprise them, you'll lose everyone but the neophile experience junkies who thrive on chaos, and if you constantly meet their expectations, you'll bore everyone to death. That definition implies that the audience will have at least a little grasp of the typical structures and when they are broken. That said, someone can be an avid listener and be thus informed without knowing how to achieve it themselves.

I've only taken a little theory and playing class, but helped -design- an instrument...does that count?
