Netflix?
does it work? I am going to be at home for a while following a surgery and wondered if it is a good thing or not? I have found some things I would watch just wonder if it is fast enough?
Anybody?

Cheers

1. How fast is your connection?
When our ISP was through Time Warner cable, our online movie viewing was great. Now that we're using ATT DSL, it's slow.

2. I've been using it for years,
and found that the turnaround time really depends on where you live. In upstate NY it truly was about a day each way (from me to them, the next movie on my list from them to me); but here in SW Florida it regularly takes 5-6 days (total).
One of the benefits, however, is that they have some movies you can stream for free.

If you're into catching up on TV series you may have missed or want to re-watch, their 3 at a time program is an absurdly fun way to have marathon sessions!

Just my .02, of course, YMMV.

Best of luck with your surgery/recovery!

3. I've never had a problem with Netflix.
I rent the DVDs by mail and it's great. Here in NYC I get delivery in one or two days. They have a great documentary list besides all of the movies and TV shows.

5. Netflix is great
So much choice, and you can really find some obscure stuff.
As far as time: I live in a big city where netflix has a receiving department- so I send it in, they get it the next day, and the third day I have one back. If you go for the 3 at a time unlimited plan, this means you can have a new movie everyday if you keep on top of the mail. With the new "instant watch" thing on your computer, you can also watch whenever. So you could conceivably watch a physical DvD and a movie or series on instant watch everyday!
If you are really unsure, check out the free-trial, but I have tons of family and friends with netflix--everyone loves it. Once in a while you get a scratched disk, but if you report it, they will send you a replacement the next day!
And I think netflix is going to expand-like once they get all the movies on instant watch. They are already starting streaming with XBOX live, ect. Very cool stuff in their future!
Do it!

Syd

8. We live in a small town and we get the movies back quick also.
And some of the old tv series we get free on the Xbox. We have just started the original Star Trek series, and are also watching a British series "The Duchess of Duke Street". I have to depend on my daughter for access to all this, but do enjoy it when it is on. Everything on tv is reruns right now and I have seen everything on in the daytime at least twice and tv is basically my life now.uggh.

7. I love it.
I use both the mail DVD service and the Watch Instantly function at home. The latter must be downloaded on your computer, but if the technologically challenged can do it (i.e., yours truly), anyone can.

The only caveat I'd provide is that occasionally I've gotten an unplayable/damaged disc, but the replacements have come very rapidly. The other thing is that their system of recommending things based on your previous choices/ratings is not a sure thing.

But other than that, it's terrific. There's a great film library that offers the chance to see things that you'll never find otherwise.

10. Thanks all
I am going to start off with Rowan Atkinson in The thin blue line and then John Hannah in Rebus and McCallum. No Dalziel and Pascoe or Low Winter Sun but they have a lot of options.

17. You can order Dalziel and Pascoe from Amazon UK
for a reasonable price and watch it and other European DVDs on either a region-free DVD player (available by mail order and costing only $20 more than a comparable regular player) or on your computer, as long as you don't watch North American DVDs, too.

But Netflix does have a great selection of British programming otherwise.

9. It's great for us.
But we live pretty close to their local depot so we usually get about three deliveries a week (sometimes two). We have the two at a time option so it works out to a little less than a video a day. They have a really massive selection including a lot of TV shows so we've never had an empty queue.

They also have instant download to you computer and to your TIVO. This is about as fast as streaming videos online so if you can watch Hulu and Youtube in a reasonable time frame, you can watch Netflix at about the same speed. It also seems to be about the same speed when we download to TIVO (we have to pause and let it buffer for four or five minutes but then we can watch the full hour without interruptions). The selection for instant watching is a bit more limited but there's a lot more than there used to be. (Say you want to catch up on Lost or Dexter... the first two or three seasons you can watch instantly on your computer or TIVO and then you can get the most recent season out on video through the mail.)

12. Usually, Netflix notifies me that it received the DVDs the day after
I sent them. It also sends out the next disks in the queue same day. Most of the time I get them within two days. Much depends upon where your closest distribution center is. So for us a four to five day turn around, not bad for snail mail.

Its biggest problem seems to be delay with newly released films; those can be on the "wait" list for days, sometimes weeks, after the release date.

Another cool thing Netflix has instant play; many films are available via computer. Some goodies, some stinkers.

It's certainly worth a try.

13. I use the "watch instantly" part of netflix and like it a lot...
Normally, I use the xbox, since you can use the netflix watch instant feature with it and easily browse their movie library.
Other media systems may also work (including your PC).

14. I haven't used the "watch instantly" but
I get new DVDs a day after I send the old ones back. Get them back to the post office before they pick up the mail, wait a day, get a new one in the mail box, even if I drop them in the mail box on Sundays.

15. The only problem I've had has been with postal delivery.
Not the fault of Netflix. The postie skips our building about one day a week (not Sunday). Lately, it's been Wednesday. The supervisors are located in another part of the county, so they do what they want. I'm going to have to call again with a complaint.

So if your postal service is good, there shouldn't be any problem.

20. Yeah... I was going thru a phase of buying a lot of cheap movies
Thinking that I "needed" a copy of various favorite and classic movies, but then a friend reminded me that I had a dormant NetFlix account, so instead of buying, I'm just adding all those movies to my queue. It lets me indulge my compulsive shopping at a fixed price!

The streaming movies are really nice, if a bit of a picture quality compromise.

One HUGE thing is that a lot of TV series are available for instant play, so if you're stuck at home, you could watch every season of Desperate Housewives or Monty Python or whatever straight through without even going to the mailbox in the snow. :)

Try it, and I bet you'll love it.

They are fast at sending out movies and have an incredible selection. Older movies and many documentaries can also be watched on your own computer, using Netflix.

23. I LOVE Netflix...in fact, I got one today (just a couple of days
after I sent the last one back) and I'm watching it now (Thomas Jefferson Ken Burns documentary). A few weeks ago I lost one and called their customer service and they were awesome. No charge. They email you when they receive the last one you sent in and email you the day to expect the next one on your list. Almost all my friends have it and they love it too. You can not go wrong. Sign up now! (I could be a spokesperson for them but they don't need one. I heard they've like doubled their business in just a little over a year).

It's about the only electronic device I've ever had that practically hooked itself up and worked right the very first time. Netflix + Roku is so good that we are considering dumping cable altogether.

33. We haven't had cable for years because Comcast is the only option in our area and I'd
rather stick red hot pokers in my eyes than ever give them any of my money ever again. Now we don't miss it at all. We can watch Anthony Bourdain, Mythbusters, Weeds, Dexter, etc...all the stuff we would've been paying big bucks to watch on cable (assuming the cable was working, which it rarely was).

27. I just switched from Blockbuster and I'm really liking it
I dropped my movie in the mail last Friday and had my new one Tuesday. Compared to Blockbuster online, that's really fast.

I also have a PS3 so I'm enjoying the streaming feature to watch some different TV shows. So far, so good.

28. Netflix is great
Edited on Thu Dec-03-09 08:44 AM by TommyO
I've been a long-time subscriber and it's been a godsend when it comes to watching some more obscure movies and older series that I want to see, but don't want to buy.

I just got a Blu-ray player and upgraded my account to include Blu-ray titles, just watching the first of them (Pixar's Up) last night.

It's rare that I don't get a disc the day after they ship it, or that they don't receive a return the day after I place it in my mailbox. Their website is reasonably easy to navigate, and their queue management works very well.

Go for it.

Edited to add: Since I also have a TiVo HD, I can watch streaming titles from the Netflix library, the most recent was Pan's Labyrinth in HD (I didn't realize that some of their streaming titles are HD).
