I am going to become the beer meister at a tap house. The owners have no idea about beer and I am doing it. This is in the Sacramento Area. Sacramento test markets for Kansas City, not San Francisco. So more than likely,Bud and Coors will still be the big sellers. Then the fruits and hefes (Widmer Shock Top and Blue Moon for example). The Cider is a freinds company and he makes a lot fo different ones.

Did I leave out a style?

Is there a beer you know of that is a great beer (we are heavy on NORCAL beers well becausse it is NORCAL)

2. Look for Kona Brewery beers

you can get them out there on the west coast. Their Longboard Lager may be a good one to have on tap and bottles for other brews.

My favorite brewery is New Glarus, outside Madison, WI. If you can move your brewhouse within the Wisconsin borders you can get it.

For Macros, it may not hurt to put Miller Lite on tap, as bad as it is, it should be there with Bud and Coors.

I am also a fan of many of Schell's brewery brews out of New Ulm, Minnesota. There are no California distributors right now but you maybe able to ask if anyone can get it.

It is a western Wisconsin beer (part of SABMiller-Coors), some are better than others, but Honey Weiss, Classic Amber, and Red you cannot go wrong with.

Point Brewery in Stevens Point, Wisconsin (central part of state) is also really good, no current distributors out in California, but ask for it and maybe you can get it eventually.

9. Is Rubicon still in business?

Their IPA had been my benchmark for India Pale Ale from the get-go. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is my other benchmark, bar none. I love barley sandwiches.

Oh, if you could squeeze it in, a pilsner would round out the affair. Sudwerk's pilsner is hard to beat.

12. Shock Top is a "fruit beer"??

You sure about that? I thought it was A-B's attempt at a Belgian Wit. There are lots of better fruit beers out there. Sweetwater Blue from Atlanta's Sweetwater Brewery is one. Celis Raspberry is another. Rogue and New Glarus both put out fine fruit beers, too.

I'm not seeing a porter on the list. Anchor Porter or Sierra Nevada Porter would be good choices.

13. Well fruit beer is more about the garnish in this case.

(even though the same people drink fruit beers and hefe types)

Shock top is the biggest seller in the bar right now among micro brews. So gotta go with it. I think it is crap (any beer you have to add fruit to is crap, IMO). but great tap handle and an agressive advertising campaign make this one a "Gotta Keep"er.

Where this tap house is, is kind of a demographic wasteland. So the regulars need the Shock Tops and the Blue Moons to cross them over from the Bud to more hearty brews.

Yes not many Browns. I had Brown Shugga (Lagunitas), but it is not available in kegs, so it is in the bottle list. I love Sierra Brown, but think Downtown Brown is better.


Now that I have passed this around I have to make some changes. I need to add the Belles Winter and remove the Oberon (summer) for example. I really need to get Pliny the Elder (probably in the Guest spot for now) and Green Flash Brewing CA IPA (A huge CA IPA)for somethng else.

We have two bars that are unused right now and eventually we will be doing another 50 beers maybe on those. Then we will be having something.

26. Blue Moon WAS a good beer at one time...

That was before Coors bought them out. I suspect the same was the case with Shock Top when Widmer was still an independent brewery. But, I see your point about them being "transition" beers. Sometimes, the problem is getting them to drink even that. This reminds me of a shindig my old boss held at her place in the country. It was a mix of co-workers, and their neighbors and hunting buddies (The Bubbas being the latter two groups). Her husband bought a keg of Newcastle. The only ones who drank it were the co-workers. The Bubbas brought along the Bud/Bud Light. They wouldn't even try the Newcastle. My boss had a similar experience when she brought some German potato salad to a pot luck. It wasn't the mayonnaise-coated stuff, so they wouldn't go near it. It sounds like you have the same sort of demographic wasteland on your coast. I feel sorry for them. They do not know what they are missing.

The Yuegling trend hasn't reached the left coast yet? Their light beer is good after a hot day in the swamp.

17. Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Flying Dog beers

You are apparently able to get Delaware-based Dogfish in California. Flying Dog is based in Colorado, I love their Snake Dog IPA, and their Winter seasonal is very good.

It is interesting to me, here in Maryland, about how many of those you have listed I have never even heard of.

727 Trader lane in old town. 4 buck pints. I amnot officially on board right now, but it is looking better all the time.

PM me and we can go out sometime. There is a new pup tht opened on Sutter st too that has some good beers.

In the meantime, try Rubicon. Best beer in Sac, great food and pretty cheap. Midtown.

21. well i'm actually IN kansas city and you're right, i know from nothing

about beer, but i can tell you what i like. i rotate between blue moon belgian white, newcastle and my absolute favorites, fat tire and sunshine wheat. it looks like you've got all those.

with only one exception (elephant bar has a proprietary beer that's yummy), i don't like is anything that's got strong honey or fruity undertones. and this may be beer blasphemy, but i can't stand guinness.

eta: i forgot one. boulevard wheat. it's a local. i don't think KC has any breweries that are in the upper echelons of beer making, but boulevard brewery is pretty good.
