Somebody explain the rec and unrec and "The Greatest" to me

I posted this in the lounge because I'm not looking to spark a debate, but I'm just curious how these features have impacted the experience of people here at DU.

Ever since I came to DU in 2003 I've pretty much surfed this website the same way.

1) Gone to www.democraticunderground.com

2) Clicked on "Enter Discussion Forums"

3) Clicked on GDP (GDP has had several names during my time here)

4) Scrolled down all of the threads on the first page and see if there's any I'm interested in replying to.

5) Clicked on GD and repeated the process

6) Sometimes go into topic forums, the lounge, state forums, editorials, etc. if I have time.

I never use or even look at "The Greatest". The only way the rec feature has impacted me is that on occasion I suppose my thread will get some more readers because of it.

Anyway, lets say I was interested in possibly changing the way I use DU. In your opinion how would using The Greatest page change my experience? And how would it have been different before the unrec feature was introduced?

2. My DU bookmark is to the new "Top Tens" page. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

I never go to the greatest, but I do go to "latest threads" just to see what's fresh.

4. I really don't think many people go on "The Greatest Page".

I almost never do unless something is linked to it. I'm pretty much a GD, GDP, and Lounge guy.

The only thing different about it since the "unrec" has been introduced is there are a lot fewer "Rec if you think (fill in a subject)" thread on it.
