What's the "proper way to dispose of kerosene?"
I have some left over from last year, and I'd like to get rid of it before fueling my space heater.

Two questions:

1. Would it actually be okay to use?
2. If not, do I just dump it my neighbor's pool, or is there a better way to dispose of it?

1. Not usable...
it "goes bad", turns into paint thinner basically. Still good for cleaning stuff, but that's about it. Call the town, they probably have a collection day for household chemicals monthly.

7. I've read a few places online that recommend mixing it 1:1 with fresh kerosene
I have a second, smaller kerosene can that would serve nicely if this is a viable course.

Unfortunately, my town doesn't have a collection day per se. I think they had one about four years ago, and that was the most recent.

Thanks for the info, though!

8. you could try the mixing thing...
testing with a small amount. 3oz. and 3oz. or such. I've never heard that before. If it works, that's better.

14. You could probably dump it in the tank of an old Mercedes diesel.
Those things would run off anything.

I filled it near the end of last winter, and the weather turned nice somewhat sooner than I'd expected.

20. pour some in a glass jar and see if it is cloudy
that would indicate water - you can put "gas dry" for diesel in it or filter it with a campstove filter funnel

it should be fine to burn, I would think.

23. Do you have any teabagger neighbors?
They probably need some kerosene for cross burnings. Sell it to them and then give the money to a Liberal cause.

27. Wait--I heard that Teabaggers aren't racist and don't identify with any political party
But they sure do hate that pesky Barack Obama for no specific reason, and they don't have a nice thing to say about any Democrat.

I'll give them a call!

kerosene heaters are just about as safe as building a fire on a hardwood floor in the middle of a room.

Just turn up the thermostat, OK?

29. Mix it with used oil
It burns fine in waste oil heaters. I dump mine at the local recycling center - a lot of DIY autoparts stores (pep boys, etc) accept waste oil for free. It is awesome for starting your Solistice bonfire. dump about half of it on the day before, so it can soak in, then throw the rest on just before lighting. Wet a twist of newspaper with a bit on one end for a starter torch.
Kerosene heaters are kind of fussy - I would'nt use anything but fresh K-1 in an unvented.
