How many of you have to sleep with fans or other noise makers on?
Ever since I was about 12 years old it's been hard for me to sleep at night unless there's a fan going all night. Otherwise I have a hard time sleeping because it's often too quiet in a room. I can do it, but I just don't sleep as well then.

Anyone else have that where they need a fan or noise maker of some sort going in order to get a good night's sleep?

I just thought of it because of the amount of time I've been away from home as of late.

I can sleep through just about anything -- total silence or a lot of noise. I'm an Olympic sleeper.

ETA: One of the most comforting noises, IMO, is one of those old-fashioned vaporizers -- the dome-shaped ones. LOVE those.

4. I'm hooked on an iPhone app called "White Noise"
have a small set of speakers, and I just dock my ipod touch and start up the application, and it generates a smooth soft "hiss" noise that helps me drop right off at night. It has a timer function also, so it fades out in the morning, which will usually wake me up.

5. I listen to the spa channel on xm all night
My SO HATES it! :D

But when it's just me, I have it on all night on a very low setting, almost as if I was lying, having a treatment at a day spa. I have a tendency to wake up during the night, so I can wake up hear it, and then drift off again.

Even if we travel somewhere else, we take one with us. It's too danged quiet without it, and the silence amplifies every unfamiliar noise.

It's for those cases where the hotel's system is either too quiet or the fan won't stay on continuously.

11. It's hard to sleep with a fan on during the winter because my room gets so cold.
However, I often will turn it on and aim it away from the bed just to drown out the television in another room.

How weird is that?

18. Mine does too
My home dates from the 1870s, and there is no duct work that reaches the second floor at all. I've got a space heater in my room that gets it nice and warm, even with the fan going. Otherwise it gets pretty cold in my room. We might be finally getting some duct work up into the attic here in a year or two so the entire house can have central heat and air.

16. Only to drown out noisy neighbours.
Fans can get chilly in the winter. Especially when they find a kink in the blankets to get at you. For me, it's never too quiet for sleeping. Though lately instead of a fan, I've experimented with ear plugs I tried for travel that actually worked for sleeping on a overnight bus. It saves on the electric bill. I just hope I wake sometime in the night after the noise is off so I can remove them for the morning alarm.

24. My mother had a theory about that, and I think she was right...
She used to say that she liked the radio on during sleep and wake times because it was soothing...like having somebody around, people around, like family when you are falling asleep.

The problem I have with it now (and I use a radio at very low volume) is that my dreams are affected by it, and I don't sleep very well that way.

The fan is something else; I need that in the warmer months. It's very soothing.

27. I have not slept well for years and about a year ago I bought a
Homedics sound machine. I have it set to rain. I like the background noise, soothingly low but the quality of this machine is not good. I hear a buzzing sound mixed with the rain. One of these days I'll buy a better one but for now, this will do. It was about $20.00 at walmart.com. I could not find one in my local stores. I have since seen them in several places. In fact, I think I just saw one in Target. For clearer sound, I'd buy a find a different brand than mine.

Seems like a lot of us have trouble sleeping.

I have to fall asleep with the TV on low volume, too. I tried a sound machine, but it gave me a headache. It's not because of noise--- there is no noise out here in the country. I just use it to turn off the static in my brain. C-span has the best "drone"--puts me right out.

37. I loved my noise machine and used it every night - then
I got married. My husband hated it and wouldn't let me use it. I love it the few nights a year that he is not home so that I can use it. We used to have a ceiling fan in our bedroom and would run it most of the year. That helped. Then we lost the house to foreclosure and are renting a house that does not have fans (or much of anything except a decent yard for the dogs) so I'm back to no noise at night except his snoring. It sucks - I want my noise machine back.

38. Must have AM radio on
I like to listen to the various 50,000 watt stations around the country.
But since they are mostly clearchannel now I am thinking of going to an internet radio.
Usually listen to CHWY from Toronto (old time R&R)
WGN or the chicago sports channel. If I wake up at 2 I switch on KOA in Denver.
Started this when I was @8 listening to R&R around the country on summer nights. (late '50s)

46. When I was a big baseball fan I used to also
and here in the midwest I could get:
Chicago, St. Louis, Cincinnati, the Twins, Houston, Atlanta, the Yankees, Boston, Philly, Pittsburgh, Denver, Detroit, Texas. (oddly not Milwaukee, sometimes KC but not often)
The strike of '93, the big big money and homers in bushel baskets ruined baseball for me.
many of the 50,000 watters that used to carry baseball around the country have been bought by CC and have dropped baseball. But during the '70s and '80s I was never far from the action whether I was cutting grass, raking or whatever.

Living in the South, the humidity is bothersome at night, so a box fan is helpful.
I also have a window A/C unit for the hottest nights.
both noises are nice to fall aslep to.
but it is the earplugs I cannot do without. Simply cannot sleep without them anymore, even tho we now live in a totally silent area.
Since the dog sleeps in my room I am not worried, he will let me know if anything needs my attention.

I have for as long as I can remember.

I think it started when I was a baby. I was born in El Paso, Texas, and my family didn't have air conditioning. So, my mother ran a fan in my room from day one. (Of course, I don't actually remember any of this. It's just what I've been told. Haha.)

It literally takes me hours to fall asleep if it is completely quiet in a room.

68. Back on Topic...
I used to sleep with a raido on as I had lived in apartments and often heard when people were home in the apartments above, below and next door. So it was a way to block out teh noise. When I moved in with TrogL I haven't been able to do that so my sleep is disturbed. I hear every noise in the house! So some nights, I end up sitting in the living room either reading or knittin/crocheting to get relaxed enouhg to go back to sleep.
