Today's key phrase is "in the biblical sense" -- add "in the biblical sense" to any thread title
Examples:
"Who here has never had eggnog in the biblical sense?"

"I kept my TV on PBS after Howard Zinn was on Moyers in the biblical sense."

1. lol
i'm bookmarking this thread. My husband and I had this discussion just the other day.

You have to understand. He used this ALL THE TIME as a joke.
He was forever going around making this joke...and then I can't remember exactly what he said...but it..just didn't fit to use it.

And then it occurred to me that he had no clue what he was saying.
I said to him, that I think he was confused about what the phrase meant.
I had to convince my husband what this "euphemism" means.
I swear, I'm not making this up...he thought it meant like in some "religious manner" or just something "in a strict or literal sense"

I can't believe he didn't know what it meant...I can't imagine whom he might have made this joke to .... seriously all the time he used this..up until a few days ago.

I've got to show him your post.

2. It doesn't HAVE to mean THAT...
They usual euphamism is "Know in the Biblical sense," based on the Gospel lineage of Jesus, where "Someone knew someone else, and they begot Little Someone." Some people have shortened it, probably not understanding what the phrase refers to originally, but that's not the only way the phrase is used.
It can simply mean how something is used in the Bible, like "Not all people who believe in God believe in Creation in the Biblical sense," or whatever.

11. They use it right, but I do have to ask why an evolutionary scientist
likes a song based on Adam and Eve.

"Adam and Eve you know they wore the fig leaf..." Next they'll be doing the Christian Sidehug and stage.

7. ummm
in the context of the idiom, yes it does...:P (no snark intended or implied)

"Not all people who believe in God believe in Creation in the Biblical sense."
You didn't use it idiomatically here. It's not wrong, per say, just used in a differently context.
I probably would never say this, though...because my ears hear the idom.
I would say something like. "Not all people who believe in God believe in creation as it's written in the bible." You don't need the idiom here, and I would avoid it, personally, as to not create confusion.

The whole reason I posted to the OP was my husband has been misusing the idiom. And yes, it does have a sexual context. He had no clue...and that was what was funny, in the end.
And it was funny to me, because the OP was doing it on purpose...out of context. So yes, it matters.
Ok so you've ruined the fun for me :eyes: :P

In the bible, they do 'know' and 'begat'...but not in the same passages. You are half-way correct on that.
The idiom refers strictly to "to know" in a sexual context.
He're a few:
Gen.38 <26> And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
Judg.19 <25> But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
1Kgs.1 <4> And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
Jdt.16 <22> And many desired her, but none knew her all the days of her life, after that Manasses her husband was dead, and was gathered to his people.
Matt.1 <25> And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

The old joke goes...."I know her...not in the biblical sense of course." ha ha ha, everybody laughs. It's like a pie in the face...always funny.

I think sometimes that people who don't know the bible, sometimes miss cultural reference and idiom because of this. I'm not a bible scholar, and I can't quote chapter and verse..but I know most stories or how to find them.
My husband on the other hand, is not religious and has never even been to church. He had no clue about Samson and Delilah, regarding strength in hair, for example.
My husband has long hair. He looks good, but it needed a trim. I said I would trim it for him, and he said he didn't want to mess with it. I teased him and said, "What are you, Samson, or something?"
He didn't know what in the heck I was talking about.
However...ask him about Steve McQueen and he knows his stuff! :) He can always tell when a movie is ripping off Steve McQueen. lol

It's kinda funny how many cultural bible references there are, even though they might no longer always have a religious connotation.
I think if people have never read the bible or are unfamiliar with the stories, the references get missed.

and I've ruined the fun for you now with my idom and religious lesson. :toast: :hi: :P
Sorry, had to, I'm a geek. But I feel better now :)

10. But the idiom only really works when combined with "know," which was my point.
Just saying "He's studying hard, in the Biblical sense," or some such, wouldn't have the same connotation except when used by people who don't know the idiom. It's like people who say "I could care less." It doesn't mean what they think it means.

I did add "know" to Matthew 1:1-17, when it's only in Matthew 1:25. It's been a while since I read the thing. :)
