There's a documentary on Ovation right now about the different treatments the 9th Symphony has gotten in different eras and cultures. The background dealt with his own history, besides the deafness, how, for the premiere, he couldn't afford a "suitable" suit of clothes.

Fer Zeus's sake!1 I don't know his biography beyond the very broad things everybody knows, but surely by the time of the 9th, with all his ouevre behind him, he must have had so many contacts and connections that SOME-freaking-body could get him a suit of clothes!1

Or was he so hidebound proud and imprisoned by the rigidity of culture that he couldn't ASK or ACCEPT this tiny bit of freaking FABRIC?!1

In the UNIVERSE that he and a few others inhabit, it wouldn't matter if he were freaking NAKED!1
