I am so proud of our new mayor annise parker, yes Houston did elect a gay woman mayor.

This is really big, she will make a great mayor.

She is also a democrat, we have a history of electing democrats for mayor.

She carried my precinct in both elections big time.

We gave her 186 votes.

This is why I work elections.

Annise has been working for the city for a long time, been elected for two other city jobs.

Houston did it.

1. You know, that kind of surprised me

Even if Houston is one of the more liberal areas of Texas, the state still strikes me as the center of the conservative universe. Parker's election was not only good for Texas, I think it was good for the country.

12. The cities are liberal, the wealthy burbs and the rural parts are conservative.

Pretty simple.

Because Texas is so big, you have large areas of no civilization and little towns.

I personally have to drive 80 miles to shop at a Target store, for example. I have to drive 150 miles to go to Costco.


Towns with more oil company influence are also more conservative. John Gunther observed in his book "Inside U.S.A." that Tulsa and Houston were the two most backwards cities he had visited in the U.S., due to the dominance of the oil industry in the local economy.

Dallas has always been more conservative than Houston, but it is changing. They elected a Black D.A. in Dallas who has reopened cases and gotten old evidence tested for DNA, which is why convicts are being exonerated and released.

I hope Former Dallas District Attorney Henry Wade (he of Roe v. Wade fame) is red lining the marble tachometer!!!

I don't know what it is about the black churches that makes them so homophobic. And the guy running against her was a leader in the NAACP at one time. How does he reconcile the hate and bigotry against gays? It's still hate against another group. I don't get it.

She is very sharp and has always impressed me. I've voted for her every time she's run for a city office since the late 90s. She'll make a great mayor!
